ROCK CITY ROCKER

AN EVENING AT HOME WITH A CREEPY STRANGER ON A PALE HORSE

-+-

(continued from here).

MON. 12th NOV. 2001 - Boy I'd sure like some Smegma records! Yeah that's what I was thinking the other night as I listened to the only one I've got (the split 7" they did with Non, specif.). Yeah their records are pretty elusive out here but I've heard this & that here & there over the years - they're on some compilations I remember from years ago like some LAFMS stuff & I guess I used to have that "Swamp Dick" single on Sympathy but that one wasn't so hot (B-side was cool tho, it had this sample of this guy saying "Marijuana is the flame, heroin is the fuse, LSD is the bomb!" or something) (hey who said that anyway, do you know?). Their music is all kindsa noise, mostly just abstractions in texture/interruptions-in-texture & juxtapositioned attractive/unattractive & out-of-context "found" whatever but also sometimes sort of primitive garage rock moves. Yeah OK so I don't know much about 'em but I wanted some reason to put a link to that Bradley Bee guy's Smegma site 'cause I think it is cool. Yeah also & another thing I know about them is, yeah they're still going & these days Borneo Jimmy or in other words the great Richard Meltzer is the singer(/writer presumably too) so I'd sure like to hear some of that.

TUESDAY 13th NOV. - this website, this diary thing - it's not really going anywhere or doing anything, is it? What should I do? Where can I take it? or where is *it* taking *me*? I don't trust my own ideas...what do you suggest, genius? Write to me, huh?
It's about 2:30 in the a.m., I've run out of chocolate, my best friend is going away & I'm sad. I'm reading this.

WEDNESDAY 14th NOV. - Maryann went away today, boo hoo I am already missing her so much. It is raining & cold even though it is suppose to be summer by now (right? I think so anyway).
I'm listening to Belle & Sebastian, man they sound like Al Stewart or Bread or something don't they!
I am sorry if this is not a very original observation, you know, I'm way to hell out of touch with modern day music discourse. But anyway I'm enjoying listening to Belle & Sebastian while Richy is telling us about how when he was in in Korea he et (local delicacy) CHICKEN ASSHOLES.
so I got copies of 2 Kinks albums that I'd really wanted for ages & guess what, they both turn out to be fkd-up copies - this is what I get for my stuck-in-the-mud devotion to vinyl - well I only have a record player - I got "Village Green Preservation Society", a real thick heavy vinyl expensive reissue - I never buy expensive records usually but you know I really wtd this record - & side 2 is pressed slightly off centre so as it gets towards the centre of the record it goes wwwooo000ooww...wwooo000oowww...wooo000oowwww...you know...it is just too fucked-up to listen to after the 2nd or 3rd track. & I had already scrawled my name in Magic Marker across the label & peeled off the price tags before I found out it was defective so I couldn't get my money back. but fortunately i didn't get the mean guy @ the record shop who is hard-ass about that stuff, I got the cool guy who ended up giving me half my money back & letting me keep the record too. but yeah still i have only a fucked-up copy of VGPS. & then today, Jon Bywater sent me a copy of "Face to Face" yay, BUT it turns out to be a mispress with the wrong 1st side, that of their boring 1st album i.e. their most overexposed songs & their most deservedly obscure songs i.e. stuff that either you've already got or just suX0r00nie. early bad Kinks songs - "I Just Can't Go to Sleep", "I Took My Baby Home", also early bad Kinks r'n'b covers - (all their r'n'b covers are very bad)
yeah so I still need copies of "Village Green Pres Soc" & "Face to Face", hey anyone if you see them affordably priced in your area perhaps you could get them for me, yes please yes please i would sure 'preciate it. but if you don't live in NZ you should really not bother 'cause the postage is just too much to here from anywhere else.

FRI. 16th NOV. - in the night I play rock records until I fall asleep :
(2nd side of) The Deviants - "PT00FF!" - the music = very good sub-Mothers/sub-Pretty Things psychodelphic montage trip; the songs & "concepts" = very bad sub-Mothers/sub-Fugs hip humour of the times.
The Who - "Live @ Leeds" - Underrated by me for YEARS merely because it (they) was (were) my fav favs as a teenager back when I knew nuthin. But hey I was right about this, wow. This so kicks Led Zeppelin's ass (instrumentally anyway...too bad the singing is so lame.)
(1st side of) Pink Floyd - "Meddle" - found myself thinking Gosh this is actually a pretty cool record curses chiz! But, I went to sleep before the end of the side.

( # - damn is this guy's links page good! [or it would be if he'd do a bit of weeding out there, there's quite a few dead lynx in there. Am I *ever* gonna find my way to 'DENIM DELINQUENT'?])

SUN. 18th NOV. - what's happened to the Puddle, you ever wonder?
well I do, & so I saw George Henderson yesterday & I asked him, y'know, have you got a operative lineup of your band going @ the moment? A: yeah well Ross & Lesley (= classic era Pud rhythm section) both live in this town again these days so he could real easily get a thing together w/ those 2 but he says he wouldn't bother unless someone was offering decent money. I.e., why bother if yr just going to play at some pub for maybe 50 bucks between 3 or 4 of you. Fair 'nuff but isn't that too damn bad, why doesn't someone pony up the $$$ & put out a new record or something...who's gonna do that tho.
Too bad but what do you expect if you choose to live in Dunedin?

MON. 19th NOV. - Maryann Maryann! you gots to come back to Dunedin & fix my computat0r! ist URGENT. Come on!

(night time)
today's sad news = death of MICHAEL KAROLI. David Rush told me 'bout it -

>>> michael Karoli (Cans guitarist) died over the weekend.
>>
>>
>> dude that's sad. but on the bright side it'll mean no crummy reunion albums
>> ever again! y'know i heard that Rite Time album for the 1st time not too long
>> ago, it was weak. So was Sacrilege I thought (you mighta liked that one tho?)
>> - i mean that one wasnt really the fault of the Can members theirself but they
>> did endorse it & say that it was “in the spirit of Can's original project?or
>> “the sort of thing we'd be doing if we were starting out now?or
>> whatever...just made them seem like out-of-touch old geezaz trying to be down
>> wit da kidz! it was not 'sacreligious', it was just mostly pointless.
>>
>Yeah you nailed that. What Drum and bass remixes have in common with can I
>dunno. The remix of Kraftwerks expo 2000 by various techno nobodies was
>another stupid idea (and yeah i own it but only as part of my five year
>musical re-education programme)...I think we both rate radioactivity as the
>best KW Lp so that says something about us. By the way I think its
>officially cool not to like KW again.
>

yeah RIP it up boy wonder (he was the kid of the group), man you & yr combo were absolutely 1 of the FLAMIN WONDERS OF THE 20th CENT fo'shizzle...hmmm what Can track should I crank out by way of tribute-paying - OK meine punters was denken sie y'all, tell me tell me tell me was sind *deine* Karoli faveroonies?

TUES. 20th NOV. - yesterday I said to Christine "So would you classify me as a deliberately annoying kind of person?" & she said "I don't think you do it deliberately".
Chris you did the right thing, coming here!

THURS. 22nd NOV. - today's pathetic excuse - "Sorry, I forgot 'cause these antidepressants I'm on play hell with my memory". I was supposed to lend this guy my car & he came round & I wasn't there. Sorry, I forgot. See, these antidepressants that I'm on play hell with my memory. So you know, when this guy came round to borrow my car...oh forget it.

FRI. 23rd NOV. - road fever excitement! Destination : Invercargill! Jane woke me up...well actually I was already awake, but anyway she came & gave me my wake-up call & a cup of tea at about 5-something in the a.m. & we were out on the rd. by about 6. It was cool, it was like when you're a little kid & you're going on holiday & your dad carries you out to the car when it's still dark...me & Christine sat together in the back of the van with the duvet over our knees, excited, saying, "hey it's just like when you're a little kid & etc etc & your dad carries you out to the car when it's still dark & etc etc etc", we both flashed back on the same stuff. Her parents were poorer than mine so we probably got to go to much cooler places tho.
What did I do in Invercargill? well I bought a new shirt.

THURS. 29th NOV. - George's dad died yesterday so Nick H. & his crew were doing his radio show for him...this is a great radio show BTW, it's called CONTEXT FREE RADIO & it is on RDU (Chch stude station) Wednes. from approx 11 pm NZ time - goes on for as long as they feel like doing it - it's usually George & Nick Hodgson & Tom & Charles...I get to participate when I'm in this town, it's choice, I did this mega Francois Bayle mix with 2 pieces by him with the drum solo from the live Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs album. Man, check this out, I am SUCH a dilettante poseur, ALL THREE of those pieces of music I was in fact hearing for the 1st time ever!

FRI. 30th NOV. - or the small hours of Saturday - I'm up late with the Internet & the National Programme - nearly everything one could need. & they were just playing "Think For Yourself" because George Harrison died...they've been playing tons of his songs & you know what, that was the 1st actual good one. He really did do some crappy music!
Oh my god tho', TWO of the all-time absolute heroes of rock guitar deceased on just this 1 page of my deadly lethal weblog, this page must be cursed!

WEDNES. 5th DEC. - I finished reading "Crime & Punishment" last night - this means my ordeal is NEARLY OVER.

TUES. 25th DEC. - nearly over...but not quite.

THURS. 27th DEC. '01 - I'm in Christchurch with my sister, we came up heer to bring Malcolm to the aeroport & we been having a real good time. We went swimming at Corsair Bay yesterday & again today & we went bowling last night with Nick H. & those guys...that was fun! not that I'm any good at it, I'm not, I'm a total spazz. But, it was fun.
So what do you think of this idea I had, this thing I wanna start doing - DJ evenings at a bowling alley? I think it'd "go off"!

FRI. 29th DEC. '01 - it's Maryann's birthday! Send her stuff!
Here in Timaru we are having thunder & lightning & hailstorms.

FRI. (if I'm counting the days correctly) 4th JAN. '02 - Happy New Year gang! is it gonna be? I think YES. I've got big plans! I'm gonna start drinking again, that's #1...I'll fill you in on the rest when I've finished this bottle. Hey you know what? Maryann gets back tomorrow - YAY! - we know all our loyal Rock City Rocker punters will do their most utmostest to make her feel welcomed & loved! I wanna see a sea of love out there!
I just got back online after a few days & I find I got email from a guy from PROUD SCUM! check it -

Hi Duane,

Saw your message on some chat page:

(Proud Scum = Auckland's answer to Sham 69. "Frill" = they sang w/ fake Cockney accent.)
Oddly, there is even a song about my home town....even more oddly , it is by ROD McEWEN. "At Long Last, Timaru".

You may not realise, but our singer Jonty Jamrag was born in England. It was entirely natural for him to say "frill". Listen to Suicide, and to Suicide 2 and you will hear his accent clearly.

In addition, our guitarist Sid, who replaced our original guitarist John Atrocity, was a genuine Cockney. John Atrocity was the author of the original Suicide, and the subject of the song Suicide 2, and all the later Suicide songs as well. They all basically said "come on, John, you said you would (in "Suicide")- why not just follow through and do it"

Hope this helps!

Alistair Rabbit (bass - Proud Scum)

Proud Scum didn't put on airs, and it didn't sing with "fake" accents.
