(continued from here).
SUN. JAN. 13th 2001 - It's the middle of summer & it's been raining for days...I can't even remember how long. Me & Jane & Christine & Otto & Lisa & Sophy went out to Aromoana yesterday - it was windy & cold & Jane had to persuade me to go out there, I just wtd to stay in my rm. - there was a dead pilot whale on the beach there - it was sad - its skin was already starting to blister up & peel off & its tongue was bloated up & had turned green & it had been bleeding out of its mouth, there was blood on the sand under its mouth. & it had a huge curved white penis sticking into the sand.
TUES. JAN. 15th 2001 - if you're worried that the lack of new diary entries means things are going real bad for me (well are you?)...well it doesn't.
FRI. JAN. 25th 2001 - ARE YOU A SQUARE? - people are always sarcastically saying to me, oh I know I'm such a square compared to you 'cause I don't take lots of drugs & blah blah blah...*yawn*, yeah I know, point fuckin' made, but yes it's still true you are a fuckin square.
TUES. or maybe WEDNES. 5th (?) FEB. 2001 - my mum was here today because the Southerner isn't gonna run any more after this weekend & she wtd to take this 1 last opp. to take the trip & also I guess wtd to check up on me 'cause she's "concerned" about me - everyone is! jesus why don't they leave me alone!...No I'm just horsin' around really - but yeah it's sort of true right now I get all this super concerned attn, all people acting like they think if they leave me alone I will hang myself with my shoelaces - yeah well I admit, it's my own fucking fault, I should stop complaining...anyway yeah, so here's my mum, it's a rainy day in Dunedin's "summer" & I'd normally try to stay in my rm & do nuthin & be left alone but I've gotta think of a thing to do that is suitable for doing w/ yr parents & making them think you lead just a normal regular life - OK so we driv out to Aramoana in the rain & walked down the beach in the rain - the whale corpse was still there but mysteriously moved maybe nearly 100m. down the beach ("mysteriously", uh yeah that'd be the tide i suppose) & considerably decomposed since I last visited but still a intact corpse...I would've expected it to've been reduced to a pile of bones by now by the combined efforts of microorganisms & seagulls, but no, nowhere near yet...I guess it wasnt really that long ago I 1st saw it, it seems a long time ago. so time must be going pretty slow for me, hey at least I'm gettin value for money!
WEDNES. 5th or 6th or something - yeah I get to go on the innernet @ home today 'cause thanx to our new (but already soon-to-be-ex) flatmate we got a good computer in the house.
SUN. 10th FEB. 'O2 - hey i just got back from Oamaru, we (me & Lynton & Dan Brady) started our new band. I'll tell you 'bout that soon, not now tho', i have not sleeped for a while.
TUES. 12th FEB. 'O2 - I'm listening to a MP3 John Segovia sent me, "Somebody Else Was Suckin' My Dick Last Night" by his blues combo The Lazy Boys - it's a Cub Koda composition, a fitting trib. to that recently-deceased minor great of r'n'r.
THURS. 14th FEB. - OK how you doing this morning, did you get any Valentines Day cards & shit? oh well. I'm sure someone loves you.
FRI. 15th FEB. - yeah the day after Valentine's Day or as our buddy Ricko said THE BOXING DAY OF LOVE. I'm in Chch 'cause those guys (Ricko, "Tony Valens", them) are havin' a party...I brung my drum kit & everything. Do you think POPULATION 3 is a good band name? it's like a tribute to that Randy Holden album "Population 2" (which I've never heard, of course). We need a real good name for our band, I feel a good name is far more important than "good" "music"...
TUES. 19th FEB. - hey I had a good time in Christchurch! Should I move there? whadda you think. I'm considering it pretty seriously... BTW if you write to me, don't write to that another.com address any more, I'm stopping using it 'cause it's not free any more. I'll change all the "mailto:" links soon but I'm in a hurry right now, gotta go, but if you write to me use wschatz@hotmail.com or duane_zarakov@yahoo.com.au ... OK talk to you soon.
WEDNES. 20th FEB. - here's my new address - doorag@eudoramail.com. Write to me!
MON. 25th FEB. - I just realised I never writ anything here about Kev Smith dying! it's been a week already (?) & - I haven't got much to say but I feel like I can't let his passing go unremarked - if you live in NZ you know who I'm talking about & no doubt you've heard tributes to the man up the ying yang...I can't add much...you know tho', the cat was 1 of my best friends all the hell thru hi skool & was there as I took my 1st faltering steps into rock'n'roll..."That drummer's terrible! sounds like a spastic trapped inside a 44 gallon drum!" (quote : Kev's dad)...&, damn, I hadn't even seen him for 10, no more than that, I don't even know, 12 years...& now I never will! oh man. Who would've..well you know, if you'd've guessed a member of that band was gonna die young you wouldn't've guessed Kev, you know. Man life springs some sick shit on you sometimes.
WEDNES. 27th FEB. - "Life's about as wonderful as a record mart/I haven't got any money that's why I'm selling albums" - sold today : 2nd Hell/Voidoids album, 2 Doors albums (you know what, those would've been among the longest lasting items in my record collection, had 'em [same copies & everything] since I was a teenager - how did that happen? oh well. All gone now 'cept I have kept the 1st album so I can maybe do tai chi exercises to "The End"), a Jimmy Castor Bunch album (not a good one - "Phase III" - it's all sappy slow sax-feature numbers), & a Siegel-Schwall album (boring '60s white blues)...no particular aesthetic losses to me, i.e., but hey I only got $20 for 'em, no $22, I beat the guy up to $22, but still : not very good. 'Cause I know I woulda got 2x that in Christchurch.
THURS. 28th FEB. - (1:30 in the a.m.) hey Maryann aren't you envious, I prob'ly *could* sleep but I choose not to. Pretty decadent! Well yeah I usually have every intention of going to sleep, actually look forward to doing it at the end of an exhausting day of avoiding doing stuff & avoiding dealing with people but y'know, the night's a good time for being alone & knowing yr gonna get left alone - nobody's gonna come knocking on my window...not in this town! not in this century! - it'd be good if they did I guess but it's also good that they don't - so I'll end up sitting here doing boring computer stuff (see I got a functioning computer @ home again)("functioning", well only just) & playing records & shit & before I know it the sun's coming up & the birds are singing...yeah life's great! I mean on a certain level it actually *is*, I'm not being sarcastic...yeah anyway I've gotta go, I can't type very fast & this computer is slow & no fun to use so I'm sick of talking to you, sorry.
FRI. 1st MARCH '02 - re: gettin play on the Nat. Prog. - hey that wasn't even the 1st time! our fact checking dept tells me the Space Dust version of "Some Velvet Morning" got played on the same show a while back. Lifetime achievement award! Certificate of Distinction! I can retire now. (already have anyway, damn near).
SUN. 3rd MARCH - return of the Identity Theft campaign!
MON. 4th MARCH - record(s) sold or attemptedly sold today - Chocolate Watch Band - "Inner Mystique" ('80s Raven reissue copy) - only got $5 for it - Enoch Light - "Spaced Out" - wouldn't even buy that, already got a copy sitting there for $20 & nobody's buying. How 'bout you? Do you want it? email me & make a offer. This person sez "Hands down the best Enoch Light record out there " blah blah blah...it isn't...I got better...a couple of this guys's records is plenty 'nuff...but if you like this kind of crap, y'know...cool cover anyway, yep. That Watch Band record was no big loss, it's I guess regarded as quite a classic by some but all the decent stuff off it is on the Big Beat "Forty-Four" comp & I have that so don't need it...the whole 1st side is ultra-ultra-ultra-lame liteweight "trippy" muzak played by session dudes i.e. not the real band & the only rockin #'s on the other side that aren't on the Big Beat one are lame too..."Medication" yeah yeah but then you listen to the Standells' version & it fuckin dries up & blows away.
also, it has stopped raining. I have a car, do you wanna go to the beach?
Tomorrow is the 1st day of the rest of my life, installment 101 : check this out, I'm doing this thing I've evaded for like 4-EVA, I'm gonna start going to COUNSELLING. So you can see i'm serious! or at least desperate.
Where did I sleep last night? on the couch at Christine's house. It was good 'cause I was in a rm where I knew that if I stayed in bed all day (which I didn't do but, y'know) there'd be people coming into the rm & I could talk to them. 'cause if I'd stayed in bed all day in my own rm everyone would assume I wanted to be left alone, & on this occasion I didn't.
(this evening's soundtrack - Groundhogs, High Tide.)
Wendy's computer has the home page set to this porno links page & you know how they have that fiendish technology - only used by pornographers - where every time you close 1 of the porno pages 3 more of em pop up & shit? (What is the story w/ that? do they think they'll make people *want* porn more by force feeding em with it? that's a ass-backwards grasp of human psychology wouldnt you say?
OR IS IT? I guess pornographers probably know more about human psychology than I do.)
anyway, ha ha, when she got home last night & I'd been using her computer & she realised about the porno homepage thing she was real embarrassed, she came into the room to tell me , BTW just so's you know that porno stuff is MY BROTHER'S, it's his computer. Sure, whatever, pervert!
man i gotta change this CD, this Hanson Xmas album is AWFUL! except 1 song was quite good but it's a Beach Boys cover anyway. no actually a couple songs are quite good...Why am I listening to a Hanson Xmas CD? in February, if AT ALL doesn't seem wack enough in the 1st place? oh just because i have access to a CD player by being in this rm (don't got one of my own that works)& so i thought i'd listen to some stuff that i had had for a while & not been able to listen to. It was a present from Menelaus Darcy, blame her, either she thinks this sort of campy kitschy stuff is funny or this represents her actual taste in music...let's hope the latter.
OK now I have changed the music, I am listening to Physics. The only promo CD I ever recieved from my 'fanzine' activities! so it's pretty special. BTW if the guy from Flapping Jet records ever reads this I apologise for never having gotten round to reviewing it, we never got around to a 3rd issue of "The Jewish Beatle", i don't remember why.
Wish I could link it up from here for you but I dunno how, sorry.
It's about 3:30 in the a.m., I'm sittin in the kitchen doing internet stuff...hey I just downloaded Yahoo inst. mess., I'm talking to Haydn Jones, he's in Switzerland.
Y'know, which is where he lives...I haven't been in contact w/ him for a couple years. Yeah well so far our conversation hasn't been super inspiring or anything but, oh y'know, the novelty of a new medium & stuff.
anyone else wanna IM me? well actually you prob'ly can't, I'm using Wendy's computer & I'm going outta town tomorrow - I mean later today - & by the time I get back I won't have a computer @ home, @ least not one that works.
yeah i'm going to Chch - Tony Valens & that bunch're havin a Valentine's Day swingin' singles type party...I feel lucky!
not that i'm any kind of "swinging single". just sorta y'know. a creep!
nope just "tangin' yr gruffies" as my buddy Brendon would say - really, I'm pretty much a real "straight arrow"! Don't be scared!
(bit later) yay this IM shit is the shit, now i can do that boring thing that lotsa ppl do where you just fill up yr weblog with yr stupid IM conversations! woo hoo!
OK I promise I won't do that really, sorry. Good night world universe solar system!
Touching tribute : well this was a big deal to me, yeah see the other day I'm sitting round with Jane & Rich & Christine & we're sorta half tuned in to the National Prog, that NZ music show that they have on whatever day it was (Sat. or Sun. I guess) - it's boring & we're not paying attn. but the mention of K's name pricks up my ears & I boost the volume to hear the announcer saying stuff about SAY YES TO APES, she's saying stuff about you know "his little known rock band from the early '80s" kind of thing & then she plays (from the famously half-assed debut album which was in fact recorded mostly in one afternoon 4-tracking session in a now-demolished house a couple min's walk from where I sit right now)(Universe City of O.) "Let Them Eat Cake" (get the 2nd album, it's better) - wow! a lifetime's ambition realised, tho' not one that I had ever conciously articulated, A BAND I WAS IN GOT PLAYED ON THE NATIONAL PROGRAMME! so y'know some good came of it. Thanks for the music, bro.
Yeah everything's better in CHRISTCHURCH, yawn, why don't you move there then, OK I will.
(music right now : Buffy St Marie "Fire & Fleet & Candlelight". Spooky!)
& re: Kev Smith - hey Russell Brown put up a MP3 of a Say Yes To Apes song & he writ to us to say it's gone to the top of the NZ MP3 charts! whatever that means. It's a great song tho', go listen! Has XTRA SPECIAL POIGNANCY for me 'cause *sniff* KS writ this lyric ("This Is Yr Lucky Night") for me, yeah it's like his message for me when I was talking about quitting the band & he's saying DON'T DO IT.
I did tho'.
