Social System | Yercaud was a Sun Taluk upto 14.10.1997. It became a full fledged Taluk with effect from 15.10.1997. There are 67 Revenue villages which have been grouped into 9 Taraff for the sake of administration and each Taraff has one Village administrative officer. Yercaud Taluk is divided into 3 Firkas viz., Yercaud, Vellakkadai and Puthur. |

The climate of Yercaud is a moderate one. The maximum temperature is 167.6°F and minimum is 66°F. In the year 1988, the average maximum temperature was 27°C and minimum is 15°C. Winter season starts in the month of September and ends in December. During Winter, the hills are covered by mist and looks beautiful. |
Nomenclature |
Yercaud Town is situated above 4800' from mean sea level. The highest point in Yercaud Taluk is Shevaroy Temple which is situated at a height of 5326'. Hence, Yercaud hill area is called "Shevaroyan Hills". It is also called "Ooty of the Poor". Yercaud is the anglicized version of the Tamil, Yerikaadu (yeri is lake and kaadu is forest), the name given to the lake and high wooded areas in Salem district. It consisted of Kadukamara, Nagalur and other villages, of which Ondikdai (Tamil for "one shop village") was nearest to the lake. |

SHOPPING |
All decent shops are crammed up in town. Most commodities are available in Yercaud itself but if You are looking for a good selection in clothes, tin food, cards, hardware and the likes, go to Salem. Yercaud shops have commodities that are just enough to be used more in an emergency than in choice. The shops close by 8:30 at night except for the liquor shop that is open until 11:00 at night. |
FESTIVALS |
SUMMER FESTIVAL - DURING MIDDLE OF MAY.
The summer fetsival has a 7 day setup of flower shows, dog shows, boating races and a fair. Crowds flock to Yercaud during this season and hang around evening when the fair is rolling until 11:00 at night.
