We started with 40...
Trimmed it to a slim 15...

And then... there were 8...

but first, a treat from last year's winner ^_^

Noted manga artist, exceptional cosplayer and AX2000 Karaoke Individual winner Yaya Han takes a break from judging to perform for us, Surreal by Ayumi Hamasaki. Dressed as Ayumi on the cover of her Surreal single and Duty album, the flawless costume was easily summed up by one audience member's enthusiastic: "WE LOVE CAT GIRLS!" :P

And here are Yaya and Ayumi side by side... can you tell who's who? Okay fine, so you can, but it's only cuz the background gave it away ^_^

AX2001 Karaoke Individual Finalist #1:

Sherry Weng performing Fruits Candy, the ending theme to "Card Captor Sakura".

Remember me from last year? :P CCS craze!!!!! As you can see, wasn't much different this year. Oh wait, I take that back! I'm a happier Sakura-chan this year cuz... MADE IT TO FINALS!!!!! Sakura, totemo ureshi desu! (*^_^*) So, was I hyper enough for you all? I think I eventually got on everyone's nerves, though. (*^^!*) AAAAHHHHH!!!!! Ya mean I didn't get kicked out??? Gotta practice harder next time! (*^_~*)

Let's see...I'm 21, live under the Huntington Beach sun, pink is fun, and...no, I'm not done! *kicks "Dr. Seuss" Sherry's butt* CCS and Hello Kitty rulez! Need to know more? Go rent yourself a horror flick, you don't need to be THAT scared, right? :P

Many thanks to the following people for their support...Martin, Alex, and Eric (my friends), Stephanie (my new-found, ultra talented, "fairy Sakura" friend from semi-finals), and David (my dear boyfriend). And of course, can't forget the audience, judges, AX Karaoke Staff who put up with me for another year! (*^^*) So next year, I should be prepared for rotten veggies! Keep those comin'! YEEEEEAAAHHHHH!!!!!! The pink bundle of terror continues!!!!!

AX2001 Karaoke Individual Finalist #2:

Sakura Shinguji AKA: May Llaguno performing Naked Heart, the second Sanosuke image song from Rurouni Kenshin.

No quote from May as of yet... that's what I get for waiting 6 months before I put up the webpage. My bad :P At least I got pics of her showing off her Sano ATTITUDE ^^;

AX2001 Karaoke Individual Finalist #3:

Anrui Ukimi AKA: Elizabeth Morgan performing Melodies of Life, the English ending theme to the game "Final Fantasy IX".

re Prelims: I was suffering from massive stage fright (this was my first time performing by myself at AX Karaoke), and I realize now that I probably looked rather funny up there, although I think I pulled it off (surprisingly).

re Semis: I was shocked I got to semis! I mean, there were so many excellent entries! ^_^

I seemed to have miraculously lost my stage fright somewhere in-between Prelims & Semis, and I think I did a lot better then I thought I would on this song. I even attempted dancing! ^_^;;; I didn't hear too much laughter afterwards, so I hope people liked my try at it!

re Finals: I actually made it to finals! I never thought I would get here, so I hadn't practiced much. ^_^;

For some background: My name is Elizabeth, and I live in sunny Moreno Valley, in the heart of Southern California. I am a rapid otaku, and a lifelong fantasy/sci-fi fan and artist. I am definitely going to AX2001 (AX2002, you mean? :b), and possibly Yaoi-Con. Hope to see you all there!

I'd like to thank Luke, Hong and Hank for putting up with me for some 6-odd hours of karaoke, and also thanks to all the rest of the daaling staff! To everyone I talked to, please email me, I lost all the email addresses! ^_^;

This years karaoke contest was amazing. Those who did show up did wonderful, stupendous, quality performances, and for those who didn't show up, well, you missed out. :P

I hope to see everyone again next year, keep on singing! (Or practicing Shaft. ^_~)

Love,
Anrui

AX2001 Karaoke Individual Finalist #4:

Alice Chiao performing Yakusoku wa iranai, the opening to Tenkuu no Escaflowne.

No quote from Alice either :( You all no quote people need to email me at:

duo_kun_2000@yahoo.com

AX2001 Karaoke Individual Finalist #5:

Mandy Lee performing Moonlight Densetsu, the opening to Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon. Mandy, what mix is this? It's got a "French cafe" feel to it :b

Yahoo! Finals! This was so awesome! I never thought I would have made it this far. Especially since this was my first time competing in this contest. To answer your question Duo-kun, this version of "Moonlight Densetsu" is done by Pretty Cast. A lot of their songs have french backgrounds to them (esp. Moonlight Destiny!) This whole contest has been totally exhilarating. I especially liked it whenever Otaku Generation got up to sing. I've been especially daring... I almost put a dollar into one of their skirts! o_O! (There IS a pic) Anyways, I'm totally looking forward to next year... better hairdo and all! I'm definately not Yaya, but there's been a transformation!

See y'all next year!

AX2001 Karaoke Group Finalist #1:

Yureki & Duo performing Dis-, the opening to Mugen no Ryvius. "No Luke it wasn't 'Infinite' from 'Infinite'"... where'd you get that from anyhoo?

From Yureki: ^-^; ehehe just don't put my pic on the website.... x.x; I lookies ghetto! As for rants and stuff, I just want to say thanks to the participants for making it a good nervous experience and to the staff for making it possible. And most of all to Duo for not yelling at me when I messed up! "Heh.. I'd never yell... I'd just put another pic of you up on the webpage... muahahahahaa..."

From Duo: Oh wow... we actually got to perform all 3 songs like we wanted. I think the judges were being kind, but hey, I'm not complaining :P For the final song, we don't do "Dis-" as well as we like, but we both love the song so I hope some of you enjoyed it even though I stunk at the beginning. We did a much better acapella (sp?) version in the next room RIGHT before our performance. But oh well, we should've practiced more ^^;;

I would also like to say thanks to all the contestants cuz I'm a karaoke-junkie and you were all great. Hope to see more returning contestants year after year... Until next year... um... see some of you at Fanime :b

AX2001 Karaoke Group Finalist #2:

Kara-Ohki's AKA: Serena El-Farra & Dan Schwartzler performing Forever Love, the movie ending to X.

Personal Info
Serena: Dan and I have been going out for a year as of September 2001, and it is because of him that our love of anime truly began. Unable to turn away from a karaoke contest, I nagged Dan into participating, and I love him for bearing with me. ^-^;;

Dan: I exist. -_-

Thoughts on Contest
Dan: My girlfriend took me hostage, so I felt it necessary to mock the judges! In closing, I'd like to say that I was a lot like Ash from Evil Dead: trapped in time, surrounded by evil, low on gas.

Serena: This contest was a great big rollercoaster ride of emotion, not only because of wanting to do our best, but because we put our hearts into it...well, I did mostly, Dan seemed to be rather laid back and relaxed. I wanted to entertain the audience and went for something drastic as our final song, Forever Love. Though not a favorite of the audience and Dan having lost his voice early on, we still tried to make the meaning of the song real... And although OtaGen ranked above us, I do not see it as a loss, but a win, since we progressed far more than either of us could have imagined.

Just an FYI, these two announced their engagement a couple of months ago... how appropriate that this pose was available, ne? ^_^

AX2001 Karaoke Group Finalist #3:

Otaku Generation
AKA: Van Nguyen, Yuhki Fukusumi, John Shin,
Philip Kim, Roger Chuang

performing Ramune no natsu,
the Narusegawa image song from Love Hina.

"STRIP!" - an excited fangirl who sounds suspiciously like a guy...
"You know we will..." - John

Scroll down at your own risk...

You were warned...

First off, WaHoO! This year was a barrel of laughs with us being dumb as an ox and twice as ugly! All joking aside, we really wanted to recognize some of the great talent out there in this anime fan world of ours. Truly, we are a great breed of talented individuals (or groups) who can put all shame aside to enjoy ourselves with our own kind. Bravo everyone! OTAKU'S ROCK!

Secondly, we just wanted to say how much fun it was performing for everyone. We worked 10x harder this year than we did last year and we didn't truly aspire to win (though it was cool that we did) but to make the audience laugh their @$$'s off.

Duo, you gave us a run for our money on that semi-finals song of yours and Kara-Ohki, that final kiss had a lot more shock value than our coconut-bras and khaki skirts (not to mention our endless rolling hills of fat) could have every had. Fushigi Yume, good work for your first year. We know you will do great next year.

Thanks to everyone who enjoyed our presentations and we hope to see you all at at AX2K2 where you will see Team OtaGen's "Super Ultra Bootylicious Candy Coated Dipped Waffle Cone Intermission Show with Whipped Cream and a side of Holiday Red and Green Sprinkles." It's revolutionary. Spread the focus and keep it real. Fo SHIZZLE MAH NIZZLE cause we're gonna do it to it fo SHIZZIE MAH NIZZIE. Otaku 4 Life!

Remember to check out the media page for links to their performances. And if I don't stop putting up screen captures, this is going to become a Otagen Fan(service) page... So I'll end the competition part of the Karaoke contest with
Otaku Generation's final photo op!

Another AX Karaoke Contest comes to an end... once again, there's the break for score tabulation... and yet once again a big THANK YOU to all the contestants and staff who make anime karaoke so much fun...

Hong gets the crowd all riled up by promoting the 5XL Concert to be held the following day by singing Juukyu-ji no NYUUSU, the opening to Kodomo no Omocha. If you missed the 5XL Concert this year, you're out of luck because AX2001 was their final public appearance...

From the very bowels of the torture list... Tommy yells out "Can I sing Eyes on Me??". And so it came to past that this rendition, unlike any other rendition before or hence, was born. Presenting: Eyes on Me, the ending theme to the game Final Fantasy VIII, as performed by Goth Rinoa.
