In 1820 King George IV commissioned John Nash to remodelled the house into a state palace. Much of the present structure and decoration are a result of this work, which was still in progress when Goerge IV died.
Queen Victoria, therefore, became the first Sovereign to live at Buckingham Palace, taking up residence shortly after her accession in 1837. The Palace soon became too small for a growing family so Edward Blore was commissioned to construct the East Front in 1847.
