Parthenon, [Gr., = the virgin's place], temple to ATHENA on the Acropolis, Athens, built 447-432 B.C., the masterpiece of Greek architecture. ICTINUS and CALLICRATES were the architects; PHIDIAS supervised the sculpture. Surrounded by 46 Doric columns, the temple stands on a three-step stylobate. The body comprised a main hall, with an inner chamber (the Parthenon proper) behind it. Within the hall a Doric colonnade divided the space into a broad nave and side aisles. Toward the west end stood the colossal gold and ivory Athena Parthenos of Phidias, destroyed in antiquity. Sculpture groups on the east and west pediments depicted the birth of Athena and her contest with POSEIDON. Of 525 ft (160 m) of sculpture on the interior frieze, 335 ft (102 m) still exist, the western portion in place and most of the rest in the British Museum. In the 6th cent. the temple became a Christian church and later a MOSQUE. Used for storing gunpowder in 1687, the center section was destroyed by an explosion, but has been reconstructed.
