Entry No:

April Monthly Meeting...

April 26th, 2001

Group President, Judy Fergerson, is still over seas so this meeting was again chaired by our PR officer, Julia Mannix.

The meeting openned with invited guest speaker Imelda Rivers of Country Arts SA who is the Arts Development Manager for the Central Region.

Imelda presented a video and gave a talk on the goals and services of Country Arts SA which is based at Port Adelaide. She also answered questions about how her organisation could assist ArtsAction as well as individual artists and other arts groups.

Primarily Country Arts SA focuses on Arts Groups and asssists them in the funding and development of projects. However Country Arts SA also provides services and programmes for individual artists as well.

Other items discussed at the meeting included:

  1. A letter was received from Malcolm Buckbey's office regarding the progress of the transfer of title for the Courthouse. Presently the Courts Administration Authority is disposing of the Court House through Crown Lands SA.

Effectively this means the Title of the Court House is being offered to other government departments before being offered to Gawler Council for sale. The letter indicated that the whole process will take between 4-5 months.
  2. Jacaranda Festival has been postponed as such our group will no longer be including a stall at this event.
  3. Our Stall at Sepplesfield on Easter Sunday went ahead with mixed feelings as to its overall success.

Many people visited the stall and made inquiries about ArtsAction and many Flyers were handed out however very little art work was sold (approx $52 worth). As well many artists forgot to submit work resulting in a last minute rush by those artists organising the stall to include additional work.

Thanks to Pat Lowe, Chris Wilsdon and others who were involved in setting up and looking after the stall.
  4. Works were bought in for the Trinity Arts Auction. See last months meeting summary for further details of this event.
  5. Treasurer, Julie Pastok gave her report. ArtsAction has a total funds of $537.
  6. Gawler Art Society President, Julie Hayes, raised concerns about ArtsAction's role in the arts community and mentioned that people were confusing ArtsAction with her group.

In particular Julie felt that the local arts groups which ArtsAction is striving to represent were losing their own identity and being over shadowed by ArtsAction. She also felt ArtsAction was being seen as an Arts group in its self instead of an umbrella organisation representing many local arts groups.

It was decided that ArtsAction would do more to recognise the groups it represents through publicising the names of individual arts groups who have representational members within ArtsAction.
  7. It was decided that at our next meeting we would discuss the Theme 'Meeting of Two Rivers' which has been set for our proposed exhibition at the Centenary of Federation Celebration at Pioneer park.
