This months meeting saw a modest turnout of members who braved the colder weather to be in attendence. Group
President, Judy Fergerson, has returned from over seas and took up her usual role as chairperson.
Points raised at the meeting included:
- In view of the immenent sale of the Gawler Courthouse towards the end of the year it was decided we should
be lobbying council now to reserve funds in this years council budget to better improve our chances of council having funds to purchase the building. A letter will be sent
to council raising the issue.
- This months Trinity Art Auction included quite a lot of ArtsAction members paintings. A final figure for
the number of our pictures sold was not known but we can confirm at least three member pictures were sold.
- Thanks goes to Artist, Karen Fiedler who set up a stall of her own art work at the Sailsbury Art Fair and
kindly promoted ArtsAction by handing out our brochure. Apparently much interest was shown in our organisation. Karen's free publicity of the group was much appreciated
and we hope her stall was a succesfull venture for her too.
- Our Centenary of Federation Exhibition is taking shape. It was decided that ArtsAction members who are
also members of other arts organisations should be encouraged to submit works in their other groups chosen medium relating to the theme of 'The Meeting of Two Rivers'. In
this way our exhibition would then reflect the range of other arts groups we are currently representing.
The theme is based on the idea of Gawler being located at
the point where the Gawler and Para Rivers meet. It was also hoped the theme would encompass the aboriginal heritage of the area, in particular the Kaurna people.
This exhibition will take place upstairs at the Gawler Visitors Centre. Our booking has been confirmed for the 2nd to the 11th of November. The exhibition will open on
Saturday the 3rd of November and conclude on the 11th. At this stage opening times will be 10am-4pm daily.
It was also suggested that a brochure should be made up
for this event that displays a map of all Art and Craft exhibits during the week long celebrations. The map would promote an 'Art and Craft Crawl' allowing visitors follow
a trail that would lead them through all the exhibits.
- It was suggested that on our new membership forms, individuals should be asked to name which other art
groups they belong to so that we can get a better idea of the number of other groups actually represented in our membership.
This initiative is part of our efforts
to reconfirm our position as an umbrella group representing all our local arts organisations.
It was also decided that the group put out a quartly newsletter,
mailed to all members, outlining coming events and important announcements. It was proposed that one way to cover the cost of producing the newsletter would be to run a
raffle at each meeting and to encourage members to donate four stamps to cover postage.
- Malcolm Bertsch has invited our group to exhibited works at the Bethany Gallery. It was decided that we
would take up his offer for an exhibition for the month of July (with the gallery being open 4 days each week).
Members will be asked to submit works (via our first
newsletter) by bringing them in to the June Monthly meeting for collection. Members may submit more than one work with the guarenttee that all artists would have at least
one of their works displayed with others displayed subject to hanging space.
Any work submitted should be properly labeled with the works Title, Price, Medium,
Size, Artist's Name and Contact number.
It should be noted that the Gallery collects a 20% commission on all artworks sold so artists should take this into
consideration when pricing work.
For this event the Gallery will be handling all media promotions including print ads in The Leader, The advertiser and various
local papers.
- Don't forget to tune your radio to 5PBA at 11o'clock every Tuesday for Joanne Huges radio show in which
she often mentions our groups activities.
- It was decided that this web site not report the actual amount in the groups bank account as it was felt
this is not something anyone other than members should know about.
However I can say that the Treasurer's report was well received although general consensus was
that we really need to be more proactive in our fund raising.
To further this point at the June meeting a proposal will be put forward to raise the groups
commission fee on the sale of art work at our exhibitions from 10% to 20%. With the commission being raised even higher to 30% for those not participating in a roster to
look after the exhibition in which their work is displayed.
It was felt this proposal would bring us more into line with other arts organisations and would help to
raise funds.
- Our group will enlist the help of an auditor to meet our legal obligations as an incorporated body. Part
of this requirement is that the group is audited on an annual basis.
