Peace Walker's Feat

Earl Standberry II is still walking for peace.

That’s quite a feat, considering that two years ago it didn’t look like he’d ever walk again.

In early 1998, Standberry passed through Tucson near the start of his one-man peace march across the country.

Shortly after leaving town, he jumped off a freight train near Benson and fell onto the tracks. His right leg was severed just below the knee.

Dr. Michael Parseghian at TMC HealthCare reattached the leg and Standberry learned to walk again. After completing therapy, he took a year off and became a long-distance trucker to give his leg a rest.

Standberry passed through Tucson last week to rally support for a monument to civilians killed in wars around the world.

He and the monument’s creators, from the Peace Abbey in Sherborn, Mass., hope to win a place for it at Arlington National Cemetery, near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

For more information, see Standberry’s Web site.
