How to advertise with SAFELISTS

Let's talk about JUNK MAIL first.

Every online marketer receives TONS of email daily. It is just a fact of life. One person wrote to me complaining that since he started building his online business, he was being bombarded with junk mail. He asked me what he could do about all the junk mail.

I gave him a few suggestions:

• First, as you have already learned, never use your main email address on FFAs or Classified Ad sites. Use a second address. Open a separate (free) account with another email service, and use it on anything that will produce junk replies.
  

• Create a FOLDER in your email program for JUNK MAIL. Then go into TOOLS, then RULES WIZARD and create a RULE that will identify all incoming mail from the most common junk mail domains (i.e. zwallet.com, etc.). Send all your junk mail into that particular folder. Then once a day, make a quick run through that folder, just to make sure there is nothing important in it, and delete them all.
  

• Secondly, if you have ONE PARTICULAR address that is sending tons of JUNK, then make a rule to DELETE it as it comes into your email program.
  
• Thirdly, click on the REMOVE link at the bottom of the junk mail and take your name off the list. THIS DOESN'T WORK if you agreed to accept mail from a free ad program or if you joined a safelist. They will remove you from the program also. Instead, just send all their mail to its OWN FOLDER.
  
• Fourth, I make a separate folder for EVERY PROGRAM I AM A MEMBER OF, and a RULE to SORT all incoming mail into its appropriate folder. As my mail comes in daily, it is MUCH, MUCH easier to decide which mail is urgent!

Unfortunately, if you are going to be serious about online marketing, there is no way on earth to keep from getting lots of mail.

About SPAM. It's not just nasty meat loaf.

SPAM is also called UCE. Unsolicited Commercial Email. If you ever post to an FFA, then they have a right to CONFIRM your posting with a confirmation email. That cannot be accused as SPAM. You gave them permission when you posted.

SPAM comes from people you NEVER posted to, never joined their lists, never requested their information, never joined their autoresponders.

DON'T SPAM!

• Don't rent or buy lists. That is a formula for catastrophe!
• Don't pay bulk emailers to SPAM for you. You can still get accused.
• Don't harvest names from websites or newsgroups. You are asking for trouble.
• Don't keep using FFA or Classified Ad names that are aging.
• Don't use an autoresponder address as your return address.
• Don't sign up in people's forms with autoresponder addresses.
• Don't use 'vacation mode' autoresponders unless you are really on vacation.
• Don't sell or give away your mailing lists. Someone may abuse or ruin it.

If you want to advertise by EMAIL:

1. Build your OWN Mailing List. Use sign-up forms on your website, or ask people to reply to your autoresponder. Either way you will catch their names and addresses and compile your own VERY VALUABLE LIST! Always send them a confirmation letter immediately with an OPT-OUT link. That is insurance that their name actually came directly FROM THEM. If they didn't actually WANT to be on the list, they can bail out NOW. Otherwise, you have just reinforced the sign-up as a valid OPT-IN member - someone who really wants to be on your list.

2. Join SAFELISTS.

Not many FREE lists get very good results any more. Most of these are being sent to JUNK EMAIL ACCOUNTS where the recipient TRASHES it and NEVER READS IT.

PAID SAFELISTS are considerably better. The people who PAY to join a SAFELIST generally intend to use the list for their own ads, and they treat the list with a lot more respect. They are more likely to SEE the ads and respond to them.

SOME LISTS are of a higher quality than others. The best SAFELIST you can use is one that is TARGETED to the kind of people you really want to reach. Don't join a list that doesn't have a similar interest in whatever you are trying to advertise. Be selective.

HOW TO WRITE EFFECTIVE SAFELIST ADS:

In today's JUNK MAIL environment, most people are automatically deleting their junk mail. Nevertheless, even junk mail gets some results. It can vary from less than ONE response per 10,000 letters,  to a typical range of .5% to 2.5%. Again, good copywriting makes all the difference.
