Project Overview

Population

This tutorial was designed for special education teachers, therapists, assistive technology specialists, parents or caregivers who assist in creating accessible solutions for persons with special needs.  Although the tutorial offers step-by-step directions, it was designed for persons who have basic HyperStudio programming experience, a basic knowledge of switch access terminology and basic computer skills.

Rationale

Many programs do not offer access solutions for persons who use a switch to access the computer instead of the standard input systems such as the keyboard, mouse, trackball or joystick.  Although the market for such programs has improved, it may be difficult to locate switch software for particular content, curriculum objectives or learning styles.  This tutorial offers educators and caregivers a solution for creating switch accessible programs for classroom or home use.  The tutorial provides a very basic level of switch access.  The learner is encouraged to expand on the tutorial stack to support a variety of access options, learning styles and content.

Goal

The learner will create a switch accessible HyperStudio stack that scans user-controlled hotspots and navigation buttons

Objectives

The learner will create a basic HyperStudio stack using multiple cards, buttons, graphics, animation and sound.

The learner will use the Button Scanner NBA to add a switch access option to the stack design.

The learner will set scan rate and delay options to adjust for individual needs or preferences.

Below are the links to each part of the project.  The apples for Rewards, Shapes, Frames and Button Scanner NBA (top row) are all part of the tutorial and represent the "disk content" referred to in the tutorial. (Please give the tutorial and rubric time to load, it takes a little while.)
