| I've always really liked this song, even though I'm not sure why.
The song Drive was the highest charting single for The Cars. Its not exactly
clear what it is really about. While some don't think of it as a love song, I can
relate to it in two different ways. I agree that I'm not sure what its about.
On the one hand, I see it as a somewhat dark and depressing song. Watch the video
of the song and you don't exactly come away with a warm and fuzzy feeling. This
despite that fact that Ric's beautiful wife Paulina Porizkova is in the thing! Now
there is an odd pairing -- Ric and Paulina. But I digress... |

Now on the other hand, I feel this can be a kind of love song in a way.
Perhaps a song about depending on each other, albeit in a potentially unhealthy way
-- "who's gonna drive you home tonight, who's gonna pick you up when you
fall". Who'll do all this for you, but me? What will you do without
me? So a little freaky if you see it like that. But...
But what about looking at it from this point of view: I know you're feeling lost but
I'll always be there for you. I know how you're feeling and I'm here to help take
care of you. You can depend on me. With the singer asking, "who's
gonna come around when you break", the answer is "me -- I'm here for
you". Think of the words as your thoughts and the singer is voicing your fears,
and trying to calm those fears by implicitly letting you know -- he'll be there for
you. "Who's gonna tell you things aren't so great" speaks to the
honesty that needs to exist in any relationship. "Who's gonna pay attention
to your dreams" reminds one to always keep others dreams in mind, because if
they're important to them -- they should be important to you. After having said all
this, I still admit that this is a rather melancholy song.
I'm not sure what the song's writer Ric Ocasek had in mind when he wrote it. He once
commented, "I thought it was kinda weird for a single. It was all two, three
chords and droning; the subject matter was kind of depressing".
Oh well, this is Eclectic Vox. And love ain't always bluebirds and rainbows.
