Setting Up and Using Yahoo Messenger
I. Logging in, adding friends, and accepting friends
1. After you have a Yahoo ID, open Yahoo Messenger. If you see the box at the left, click on Sign In. It will take you to the box on the right. Maybe the Sign In box (on the right) will be on top. Fill in your ID and Password. IMPORTANT: UNCHECK THE 2 boxes - Remember my ID and password and Automatically sign in. Otherwise the next person who uses this computer can use your ID.
2. Next you may see the graphic for Inside Yahoo. Close it by clicking the X in the right right corner. (When you're more comfortable with Yahoo Messenger, go into the Messenger menu, click Preferences / General, and set it not to come up automatically.)

3. Next you'll probably get the Welcome to Yahoo! Messenger image. Use it if you already have Yahoo friends in your Yahoo or Outlook address book. Otherwise click on Cancel.

4. Finally, you see your list of friends. (If you're a new user, you need to add friends.) To add friends, click on the Add icon near the top of the box.
5. Fill in your friend's Yahoo ID. Then click Next. (In class, the teacher will list Yahoo ID's on the board or a handout.)
6. Next, choose or enter a name for your group of contacts. Then write a short message with your name to ask your classmate to add you to his/her list of contacts. Click Next.
7. Finally, you get the Add to Messenger List message, saying that you have added this person. To add more friends, click Add another contact. Then repeat steps 4-6 until you have added all the friends. When you are finished adding friends, click Finish on this box.
8. Classmates will also send you messages asking you to be their friend. The message will look similar to the one below. For anyone in our class, click on Allow this person to add me and see when I am online. If you don't know the person, click on Do not allow this person to add me or see when I am online. Then click Finish.
9. Now you're ready to contact one or more of your friends.
