Born 23rd April 1971, even Charmaine Sinclair's birth is shrouded in mystery and confusion that tends to crop up again and again in her life. Her place of birth has been given variously as Chicago, Detroit, Jamaica, and England. It is generally taken as Surrey, England. Charmaine was another of the famous faces (and bodies) of the golden age of the tabloid Page 3 model. For those of you unfamiliar with the UK press scene, the tabloid papers in the UK feature a topless model on page 3 of each edition. In the 1980s, these models became household names, such as Samantha Fox, Linda Lusardi, Gail McKenna, Maria Whittaker, Kathy Lloyd and Linsey Dawn McKenzie. You may notice from this list that Charmaine was one of relatively few women of colour who appeared in the generally conservative 1980s tabloids. She was also one of the most beautiful women to appear in glamour modelling at that time.
Charmaine popped up on the mainstream radar when she was romantically linked to Robert De Niro. While this was not unexpected for DeNiro (his penchant for black girls was well known) it caused a feeding frenzy for the British tabloids. Some began to report the story, referring to Charmaine as a "£3000/night call girl/porn actress". The same report asserted that De Niro's lawyer insisted he had never paid for any services. In a 1998 telephone interview, Sinclair characterized the relationship as "a normal meeting, a normal clean relationship" that she kept private for five years. She emphasised (correctly) that most of her career had been standard glamour modeling. This was fairly typical of the atmosphere and tone of the British tabloids.
The last appearance by Charmaine we saw was a British tv documentary following her to the USA while she considered performing in hardcore movies. At the same time, a US adult actress was trying to break into hip-hop. She met with Mr. Marcus, who was understandably very keen for her to make the move! But ultimately, Charmaine decided against the adult film business, and the US actress did not have much luck convincing the misogynistic hip-hop world to consider her as anything other than eye candy for videos. On the one hand, we're glad for Charmaine, but we would have liked to see her perform!
