Neighbours - everybody needs good neighbours. Well, so went the theme tune to one of Australia's most successful exports - daytime soap opera Neighbours. Why, we'll never know, as the show consisted of a lot of backstabbing, and people generally pissing off the folks who lived next door to them. It did, however, prove to be the training ground for many a piece of eye candy. Actresses would sign on, and play Girl Who Looks Like a Model, But Is Willing to Work in a Chip Shop for Bog-All Money #27. And thank the lords of Ozzie TV, we say. It's not for us to question why someone who looks like Kimberly Davies would want to be a waitress, but we can be thankful that, for the purposes of the daytime soap, she did.

Similarly, most car mechanics don't look like Kylie Minogue, unfortunately. Yet there was wee Kylie - dressed in overalls and covered in grease (but not in a good way) with her head stuck under the hood of a pickup truck. But Kylie soon left Neighbours behind, and the mid 1980s saw her move on to the bright lights of London, England to become a singer. Unfortunately she ended up with the Stock, Aitken & Waterman production team instead. These were lean years artistically, but she filled the spare time with some dodgy film roles. None of this did her career any good, even if it did make her bank manager happy.

The years that followed can be summarised as Kylie-searches-for-her-niche. There were fewer acting gigs, and more albums. The music went from pop to indie-lite to dancefloor. There was dating of Michael Hutchence (INXS singer, Helena Christensen's ex, Paula Yeats partner and, finally, infamous asphywank victim). Finally, Kylie found her calling - danceable pop princess and sex kitten. This new career was based almost entirely on Kylie's arse, which now had a starring role on the world stage. Rumours of a solo career for her bum were quickly scotched.

Then on the morning of May 17th 2005, the news broke that Kylie has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has campaigned for breast cancer awareness in the past, and it looks like it was caught early. She cancelled her Australian tour, and sought treatment immediately.

By the end of July 2005, the reports were that Kylie had to have more operations after her initial treatment, but no further details were immediately available. But by October, photos emerged of Kylie looking well, although she had a headscarf on, probably to cover the effects of chemotherapy. But she was out and about, and seemed to be on the road to recovery.

In April 2006, word came that she was in the studio working on new material. By September 2006, Kylie was back in the public eye, looking fit and happy. Over the course of 2007 and 2008 she resumed a full schedule of touring. It is reported that in 2009 she will headline a few large shows.
