Paints, Lacquers and Adhesives

I have used all of the following but some may not be readily

available, however similar ones can be sourced.

NB. Always read the precautions on the labels as they

may be inflammable and/or toxic.

Gloss finish can be obtained by spraying with Aerosol Paints such

as Car Touch-Up Paints and model makers Enamel, eg.Humbrol.

It is difficult to get a good gloss finish due to the porosity of Egg

Shells.

Vinyl Silk emulsion can provide a good finish especially if glazed

afterwards.

Pastel Pearlised Paints made for Bisque Pottery are ideal for Eggs.

These must be mixed thoroughly before applying with a brush or

by dabbing with a small piece of foam sponge. Three coats are

normally required. Brushes can be washed out with water. Examples

of these are Duncan Liquid Acrylic, Duncan Bisc-Stain, Liquid Golden

Pearls and Ceramichrome Bisk Chrome Pearl Stain.

Duncan Ceramic Sealer will seal Duncan Paints to give a Gloss Finish.

Regal Egg Sheen and Decal-It are available in Matt and Gloss Finishes

and are suitable for making transfers, sealing and for decoupage.

NOTE : Decoupage is the sinking of print onto the surface of an egg

to give a hand painted appearance. After several coats it can be

rubbed down with fine sandpaper and given a final coat.

White Craft Glue is a thick Poly Vinyl Acetate Emulsion such as Evostik

Resin W Adhesive and Hi-Tack All Purpose Glue. These can be thinned

with water and used for sealing the inside of the shell. Use from a

Monoject Syringe when applying braids and ribbons.

Clear Adhesive. Preferably use from small tubes with a pointed nozzle

such as Bond 27, Bostik All Purpose Clear or Evostik Clear Adhesives.

Some clear adhesives are available in non flammable versions but the solvent based ones tend to be faster drying and tend to be tackier.

Normally used for applying braids, filigrees and flat backed stones.

Epoxy Adhesive is a two part quick setting resin, such as Araldite Rapid, Devcon and Bostik Fast Setting. Mix only sufficient to be used in about

three minutes and use for hinges, stands, handles tops and chains.
