Temple of Dendara Reconstruction

15th December 2001 - Step three - making the gateway and Façade.

(*click* here to return to Step two)

This week I will make the façade walls and the gateway. Then I'll assemble all the elements I've made so far on a tiled floor.

As you can see this part of the project is relatively simple. The above diagram shows the side and front views of the wall. It is made from a number of easy to make shapes - cubes and cylinders.

When the different parts are 'glued' together the surface is treated in the same way as the column - images, which were previously made in Photoshop, are applied. The finished wall (left) is copied and pasted twice and each of these walls are then painted with different images.

The post of the gateway is also an easy object to make - the curved lintel was made from a cube. The shape of a cylinder was intersected with it and subtracted from the cube. (see left)

Now I have one complete column, a wall and one post of a gateway.

I could just use a flat plain for the floor and apply a tiled image. However, I want to have a more realistic effect with each tile being grouted in electrum (an alloy of gold and silver which was much valued in ancient Egypt). Nevertheless, it is just a matter of making one tile then copying and pasting until I've cover the area.

Next I copy and paste two more columns and together with the three walls and gate post they are positioned to form one side of the front of the hypostyle hall.

By copying and pasting the objects it does not take long to populate the area with a forest of columns. Unfortunately, my PIII with 512 RAM is struggling so I'm going to buy a new motherboard, CPU and RAM before I complete this project.

The next step is to make the outer building, which the columns support. I probably won't start this until the New Year.
