Evolution of Mexico's unique music
Indians had only drums and flutes. Spain brought guitars and violins. Late 1800s immigrants from Poland, Germany and Czechoslovakia added horns and accordions to stringed instruments to form today's wonderful music, in 6 / 8 time.
SON JAROCHO - dance music from Spain imported to Mexico's east coast especially Vera Cruz during Mexico's colonial era 1600 - 1700. La Bamba is a wedding song
NORTENO - 1950s - themes mostly drug smugglers and undocumented workers, also tragic romance and dance music
CHICANO - includes Tejano - combines music from Mexico and the U S. Influenced by rock, hip-hop, salsa, banda
RANCHERO - drinking songs, down and out songs
BOLERO - tragic romance
Bajo Sexto - a kind of guitar
Requinto - lead guitar
Tololoche - bass guitar with thick body and short neck
Guitarron - 5 strings and a creased bulge in back
Conjunto - musical group
If Las Mananitas is for birthdays, Christmas and the Virgin de Guadalupe, what corrido is for Saints' Days? Where can I find the lyrics and MIDI? Any others out there? I already have Malaguena and Las Mananitas.
A friend writes:
Chicano means people moving to the US after Porfirio Diaz fell in 1910. Texicans of hispanic descent and culture are of 2 basic groups. Canary Island settlers brought hispanic culture to Texas. Native Texans were educated in this culture by Franciscan Brothers at Roman Catholic Missions. Other Native Americans settling in Northern Mexico are Seminole/Negro tribes and Kickapoo, invited as a buffer between Apaches and Mestizos. The term "Chicano," originally unknown and not historically used in Texas, means trailer trash to the hispanic Texan with his own proud heritage. The term was used by Mexican settlers in Arizona and California but not Texas, misuse of historical terminology. A Texican of hispanic origin says "we chicanos must stick together," threw so-called Chicanos out of his house. Recent use of the term and supposed honors bestowed by naming streets after Cesar Chavez are considered an abomination compared to honors earned by Texicans of hispanic descent. They don't belong in Texas. Norteņo, Ranchero, Bolero and salsa are terms acceptable in Texas, NOT Chicano.
LAS MANANITAS TAPATIAS
Las mananitas Sung traditionally for birthdays. Why not simchas too?
Que linda esta la manana
en que vengo a saludarte
venimos todos con gusto
y placer a felicitarte
El dia en que tu naciste
nacieron todas las flores
en la pila del bautismo
cantaron los ruisenores
Ya viene amaneciendo
ya la luz del dia nos dio
levenate de manana
mira que ya amanecio
Quisiera ser solecito
para entrar por tu ventana
y darte los buenos dias
acostadita en tu cama
Quisiera ser un San Juan
quisiera ser un San Pedro
para venirte a saludar
con la musica del cielo
Las Mananitas Tapatias - English
How lovely is the morning
As to you our song we bring
Together we come on your birthday
Our love for you we sing
Dawn breaks in the East
The moon has gone to rest
Now dear ---
Hear the songs we sing
For you we love the best
We come to greet you
Virgin of Guadalupe
We Mexicans receive your blessing
On this day your birthday
We bring you our love
Virgin of Guadalupe
Give us now your blessing
Help these fine people spread calliope music!
