February 2001 Issue
NotTheNews is an irreverent look at life in Merida Yucatan, Mexico; from a neurotic (and completely nuts!) foreigner's point of view.
Last update: 04/01/01
This cartoon pretty well sums it up!
My hero Tony, published this in the Diario de Yucatan on January 17, 2001
This Month:
Merida - Just a Nice Place to Live - as Long as You're Yucatecan!
First there were the 'waches', as in "fuera waches". Then the Republica de Yucatan flags. Then the hilarious Yucatecan "national" anthem. Now this!
'Yucatan defies President' scream the headlines! Electoral Unrest!
What's next? Does Yucatan want to become a walled society like China in the 60's? While the rest of the world moves towards a global economy and borders disappear, does Yucatan want to take steps back in time? Will the state separate from the rest of Mexico? Will Chiapas, Tabasco and Yucatan (and Campeche by default) join together to form a new nation, closed to all; a kind of tropical North Korea?
Read all about the latest incident and other comments related to the new nationalism below!
