Second Day

1999. The Year of the Junior, Day Two.

September 8th was the first Gold Day of the year. For the first block, 2nd period, I have German III. It is called German III for two reasons. First, this is my third year of German class. Second, I can only speak three words in German. Just because I am not very good in German means that I will try to blame it all on my teacher or the text books. I will be very straight forward and take full responsibility for my lack of German knowledge, and I be very honest and place all the blame on my teacher and the text books.

First off, the German books were published in the mid-’80’s, which means that, according to them, there is still an East and West Germany. Also, they have the pictures of the German native teenagers that are trying to look cool, by wearing short, tight shorts! I don’t want to see that! And if that doesn’t discourage our learning enough, our teacher believes that if she speaks enough German to us, it will eventually sink in. This is along the same lines as if you talk to a cow in English for a year, the cow should be able to communicate with humans in complete, grammatically-correct sentences. You’d think that this is an IB class.

Luckily, I have a lot of friends in the class that are just as confused at the language as I am. Sam, Katie, Elizabeth and I all looked forward to not learning anything this year, but we planned to have a lot of fun in the process. Our teacher planned to have us separated by giving us an alphabetical seating chart. As it turns out, I am sitting across the aisle from Sam. I like this seating chart.

After an hour-and-a-half of German-like babbling, I headed off for Symphonic band. According to the auditions from last spring, I was temporary section leader, followed by Jeff, Kevin, Paraag, Shayni, James and Greg, in no particular order. I think that this is the correct order, but I don’t know exactly. All I know is that I’m ahead of all of them. But since we stand for the whole time, the seating is rather unnecessary.

Before history, we have lunch. We, being James, Paraag, Shayni, Eric and Alicia. We usually sit at the same table every day, but not in the order. Sometimes I sit next to James and across from Paraag, or between Shayni and Eric, or sometimes they just exclude me altogether.

Everyday after lunch, I go to history. Everyday in history, I sit in the same spot in the front row. Everyday, I try not to fall asleep during the half-hour lecture that "will not be on the test, but you should listen to anyway." Basically, that translates into, "I have not actually written a lesson plan for today, nor do I want to write a test for you. So, to fill up the time, I will try to relate a story from my life into the creation of the House of Burgesses. It all started when I was five years old, and I was in my tree house. My neighbor, Billy, wanted to come up, but he couldn’t climb up the tree…" SNORE!!

My last class of the day is IB Physics I. Josh is in my class, so I have nothing else to say in this sentence. Mr. Mika is the teacher, and was James’ teacher last year. James does not have that strong of an opinion regarding Mr. Mika. Actually, James has a very strong opinion of Mr. Mika, but I cannot write it, because my mom will probably want to edit this at sometime or another. All I will say is that I agree with his statement at this point.

After school on Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays, we have Marching Band rehearsals. These last from about 3:00 to 5:00, but I usually don’t get home until 5:50, leaving me less than 5 hours to finish 6 years worth of homework. And since we only have classes every other day, the teachers feel that they should give us even more work, since none of have personal live what-so-ever and can afford to spend three hours changing a great 350-word essay of F. Scott Fitzgerald into a crappy 200-word blurb about F. Scott Fitz—crap! I passed the word limit.
