In their first live album since the '70's, ELP returns with a decent performance set. Their age is unfortunately apparent on this album, although their presence and excitement is still there. Most of these songs, strangely, are not off their latest studio album, Black Moon. They start off with their single edit of "Karn Evil 9" off Brain Salad Surgery and then the beginning of "Tarkus" from Tarkus.
They next play two rock songs, one old, one new: "Knife Edge" off Emerson, Lake & Palmer and "Paper Blood" off the new Black Moon. Then Emerson gets his feature with Prokofiev's "Romeo & Juliet," also from Black Moon, and then "Creole Dance." Lake plays the old classics "Still...You Turn Me On" from Brain Salad Surgery and "Lucky Man" from Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
The band then plays "Black Moon" off the new album and "Pirates" from Works, Volume 1. The finale is a medley of "Fanfare for the Common Man" off Works, Volume 1 and Berstein's "America" and Bach's "Rondo." The music and power is great, but I still don't think that they've quite figured out how to use the new technology on stage as well as they could. Overall, better than average, but less than Welcome Back My Friends.
