Summary

In this design project, the main aim of this project is to design a new bowling machine, which is designed for cricket users for the sport practice to develop the reactions and techniques. The objective of this project will design a new ball-throwing device and design a low cost non-powered system to propel the balls at the different speeds and rotations for this type of practice. The cricket bowling device is to practice returning serve whilst cricketers can practice batting and fielding technique in a controlled manner. It also can throw two or four seam fastballs. It is designed for all age or skill level players.

The ball throwing devices have long been used in sports practice to improve the techniques and reactions. From the research in the existing products, the Bola is the worldˇ¦s no. 1 cricket-bowling machine. The Ultimate pitching devices is one of product using springs mechanism. Due to the traditional system, most of the machine is electricity. The non-powered system is introduced in the new design. Therefore, the spring-powered system should be chosen and used in this main design to provide a non-powered system. It is portable and compact. It also produces at a low cost.

The engineering design criteria and specification involves the application of scientific and empirical knowledge to the development and analysis of basic functional features for models, devices, equipment, product and further subdivisions into mechanical mechanism. The design processes would be started from calculating the force applied to the ball, calculating the moment of inertia, investigating of aerodynamic force of cricket ball, developing the specification of the machine, designing the conceptual design and detail design. Based on the projectˇ¦s aim, the aerodynamic effects of different spins on pitched cricket balls should be investigated and concerned about how to propel the ball in the proper way. Moreover, the conceptual generation and drawings were produced. According to the project, the detailed CAD drawings were done in the Uni-Graphics.

Finally, the materials selection and manufactured processes are also the major part in this design project. The durable steel and aluminium were chosen. The user manual should be made to teach how to use the machine properly and should be produced to help the user to use the device.
