ExCET Standards Features of the ExCET

The purpose of the examinations is to ensure the educator has the necessary content and professional knowledge to perform satisfactorily in Texas public schools. The tests are criterion-referenced multiple-choice examinations designed to measure a candidate's knowledge in relation to an established standard of competence rather than to the performance of other candidates.
Some tests have additional assessment modes. The English test requires examinees to produce a written response. The Braille test requires examinees to produce brailed response.
Test retakes are permitted until a passing score is obtained. Examinees who fail a test and wish to retake it may do so at any regularly scheduled test administration by submitting a new registration form and payment along with their departmental approval form. No registration will be bar-coded and forwarded to NES without academic department approval. Examinees who are completing requirements for certification through an educator preparation program will be required by their program to complete additional requirements established by the program before authorization to retest is granted. You may not register to take the same test more than once on the same day.
Preparation strategies and additional information are contained in Preparing for the ExCET (Test Preparation)
