The group met in the car park on a fine cold morning, for the Basic Geology trip, ideal conditions to get to grips with basic geology. Muriel led the 10 of us around and there were plenty of opportunities to practice dip and strike, and to explore the quarries, where we saw some possible channel flow structures.

The fine ash layer found towards the base of the exposure in the Eyam Limestones was examined and was described as ‘clay’ which is not surprising after all the weathering it has endured.

After a warming lunch we had an enjoyable walk along the old railway line to Black Rock and took the opportunity to examine the sandstone exposure (Ashover Grit) and obtained fine views over the surrounding area and the numerous quarry sites both working and abandoned in the area. It started to rain or as the more uncharitable said ‘snow’ but it cleared and we visited the Steeple Grange Quarry, which has been cleaned up since last year, to look at the shark dermal denticles and then returned to the car park.

Thank you Muriel for leading a good trip.
