Winter Weekend 2006 - Snowflake - was held over the weekend of 3 - 5 November & was led by Dick Crofts & Simon Price in the Greater Manchester area.

We would like to thank Simon Price and Dick Crofts for the minibus driving and the geology explanations which made the trip so enjoyable.

Here are some pictures.

Chadderton Hall Park, on the River Irk, we found an exposure of pebbly sand, including some Borrowdale Volcanic Group erratics (above). ‘They don’t get much bigger than that’ said Dick, so Simon started digging another one out……. Not even the geodog could get it out…... (Photos, Don Cameron)

Right: In the glacial meltwater channel at Rushy Edge, this ran parallel to the strike of the Helpet Edge Rock. The picture is taken looking East up the dip slope in the sandstone beds, showing where blocks have slipped down towards the observers. (Photo Don Cameron)

Left: Shedden Hushings. The Ribblesdale Till is characterised by the presence of Carboniferous Limestone clasts. Here, hushing has been used to wash them out, leaving only the sandstones. The limestones were burnt in limekilns and the resulting lime transported by pack pony to Halifax. Dick reckoned 4 million cubic metres had been moved during the 150 years of working.
