I can't play m2v videos! What am I doing wrong?

With many MPEG videos going around in SVCD format, some people are having trouble playing them. First, you need to know that SVCD videos are simply MPEG-2. Unlike MPEG-1 you need to have some kind of software or hardware decoder installed to play them. These decoders are simply direct show filters packaged with most software DVD players. PowerDVD, WinDVD, and Ligos' players all contain these decoders. All you have to do is install them. Once installed Windows Media Player will also be able to play them.

If software decoding is too slow for you, you can always pick up a Hollywood+ decoder card. These cards run about US$50 and are an excellent choice for DVD playback on a PC. Software decoders however, are usually sufficient provided you have a decent PC.
