Barbara is the daughter of the police commisioner, Jame Gordon. When Commissioner Gordon was framed for a crime he didn't commit, Barbara pleaded with Batman to make an appearance at a rally for her father. She thought that people would be more inclined to believe that her father was innocent if they thought that someone as respected as Batman believed it also. Batman refused to attend the rally so Barbara took matters into her own hands. She made a costume like Batman's and decided to impersonate him at the rally. Unknown to her, Batman sent Robin to the rally in his place. Robin was surprised to see Batman there. He soon figured out that it wasn't Batman at all. He tracked down the impersonator and discovered that is was a girl - Batgirl. Robin and Batgirl ended up doing battle together and Robin realized that Batgirl would be an asset to the crime fighting unit. After some time, Batman agreed and they called on Batgirl as she was needed.
Batgirl's crime fighting days ended when she was put out of commission by the Joker. He shot and paralyzed her. Although she could no longer physically fight crime as Batgirl, she changed her persona to Oracle and was very useful as a resource person for other crime fighters.
