Giganotosaurus

Pronunciation: giga noto saw' rus
Translation: Giant Southern Lizard
Period: Mid Cretacious at the end of the Mesozoic Era
Height: 47ft
Length: 12ft
Weight: 8 tons

Giganotosaurus was found in 1993, near the town of El Chocon in Nothern Patagonia, Argentina. (Southern Argentina) It was discovered by an amateur fossil hunter named Ruben Carolini in the windy badlands of that area. There was about 80% of the skeleton found. It was named Giganotosaurs or Giant Southern Lizard. The Giganotosaurus was bigger than the Tyrannosaurus Rex, and lived 30 million years before the T-Rex. Giganotosaur may not have been as powerful as the T-Rex. Giganotosaurus is the largest dinosaur known.

The Giganotosaurus was 47 feet long, was 12 feet tall and weighted 8 tons. It walked on two legs. The Giganotosaurus's brain was the size of banana. It had enormous jaws with 8 inch long serrated teeth and a 5 foot long skull.

Giganotosauras was a Theropod dinosaur from the Mid-Cretaceous Period at the end of the Mesozoic Era. The Giganotosauras went extinct during the K-T mass extinciton. The Giganotosaurus lived about 100 Million years ago.

The actual fossil remains of Giganotosaurus must stay at the Museo Carmen Funes, in Plaza Huincul, Argentina. Since Argentine law forbids the export of fossils, they made a molding of the Dinosaur. This molding was assembled at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, June 13, 1997. It can be seen atop the admissions desk at the Academy.
