Lego Ships three new titles
(by CG Strategy Plus - 08/10/99)
Just another children's game?
Anyone who was a kid sometime in the past 65 years or so is probably familiar
with LEGOs, the innocuous little plastic blocks that aspire to make architects
and engineers out of everyone. Depending on how long ago your childhood was,
the variety of LEGOs and "theme sets" available today might come as a bit of
a surprise- castle LEGOs, pirate LEGOs, Star Wars LEGOs even OJ Simpson LEGOs
(the little Lance Ito figure is awfully cute). All right, we are not entirely
certain that the last set exists (it should, though)-suffice it to say that
the LEGO world has grown vast.
Last year the company shipped its first products
for the PC market-LEGO Creator, LEGO Loco and LEGO Chess-via its new LEGO Media
International division. Next in line for release is a whimsical racing game
called (logically enough) LEGO Racers. Cute? Yes. Just for kids? Hardly.
In the realm of arcade racing, there really is not a lot of distinction between
games for kids and games for adults anyway. Most games of this ilk lean towards
the "simple and flashy" aesthetic, and LEGO Racers is no exception. You race a
car (built out of LEGOs, of course) on a variety of tracks and circuits based
on various different LEGO themes such as pirate coves, Egyptian ruins, and alien
worlds. A number of powerups are scattered along the track, giving the player
(and other drivers) access to cannons that slow other racers to a halt, speed
boosters, shields, and oil slick droppers. Special white blocks can be collected
to increase the effectiveness of these powerups by up to three levels-one white
block on top of a cannon powerup, for instance, turns the cannon into a grapple
gun that allows drivers to snag a car in front of them and slingshot past.
Players have the option of building their own cars out of a variety of classic
LEGO blocks, and how you use the blocks affect the car's top speed and acceleration.
There is something strangely mesmerizing about the concept of building your own
car out of LEGO blocks and racing it. Many adults may never realize that this
game exists when it ships at the end of August-at least not on the PC, since
most software retailers keep children's titles strictly segregated from the
"real" games. Nintendo 64 and PlayStation version are due out sometime later
in the fall.
