Keeping Things
Under Control |
2/27 Update:
There won't be a story update this week. I have a bunch of non-net things
to take care of. Sorry! Feb. 21, 2005 DOM-LAND, Middle-Earth— They're still hanging on. The Dom-Land Caribou managed to work through another game without Gandalf, tying the Rohan Riders 3-3. Gimli played goal, although not as enthusiastically as before. "That !$%#!! puck hit my !$%$#!! head!" he roared. Actually, the puck bounced off the side of Gimli's helmet while he was looking in the wrong direction. His head is fine. Dwarf helmets are tough. "They shouldn't be allowed to go back there!" he said, referring to the space behind the net. Apparently something about players crossing behind the goal throws Gimli's spacial concentration off. The fact that Eomer laughed at the loud noise the puck made bouncing off the dwarf's helmet didn't help the situation. "What?" said Eomer. "It was funny." Being at a disadvantage, the Caribou hoped to catch the Rohan Riders shorthanded as well, since Eowyn was suspended for killing the Witchking two weeks ago. The Riders, however, are quite used to playing without their fiery teammate, and rumor has it they always make two game plans, "just in case." The Riders played well enough to put up two goals early in the first period. "Our defence just wasn't clicking," said Legolas. Boromir had been switched to defence, and Elrond had been experimenting with a left-wing lock* with varying degrees of success. The whole point was to limit shots on Gimli. "We're getting better," said Boromir. Indeed, after those first Rider goals, the Caribou clamped down and played solidly in their end, taking very few chances. "We can't make mistakes," said Sam, who appeared to be taking his newfound defencive duties quite seriously. "We can't make mistakes ever!" The Riders apparently thought the Caribou would be a little disoriented in their new positions and left openings here and there. The 'Bou, of course, took advantage. Pippin, now on a line with Strider and Frodo, jumped on a sloppy pass and knocked a goal in during the second period. Legolas added another goal off a Merry pass to tie the game. But the Riders came back with their line of Bearded Rohan Women. BRW Rider nicknamed "Tiffanie" put Rohan ahead in the third after BRW "Kimberlie" put Merry on his backside. "Eowyn would've never done that," Merry grumbled. "Teacher's pet," said Boromir. "You're just jealous," said Merry. It was at this point that the puck hit Gimli's helmet. Enraged, the dwarf came out of his crease to attack the puck, which, more than any defence formation, dissuaded the Rohan Riders from attacking the Caribou goal. Enough so that Frodo snapped up the puck on a broken play to tie the game two minutes before time ran out. Overtime was uneventful. Gimli, however, was still raging long after the final whistle. Caribou officals report Gandalf is skating a bit in practice, but he's not facing shots just yet. There is still no official comment on whether the 'Bou will look for a back up/temporary replacement goalie. Next up for the Caribou is a rematch with the current Precious champions, the Eldar. *The "left-wing lock" is a defencive formation of forwards. That's the best I can do for an explanation. Notes: Due to the severe depletion of players because of Cave Blight, the Moria Orcs have been reorganized into the Mighty Orcs. The Mighty Orcs include orcs of every variety. Yay. Notes II: The Peanuts comic strip that inspired Gimli's rampage will be scanned and posted around...Wednesday, I hope.
