Here I am sticking my tongue out.

This is Lucky. Lucky is a very special puppy that has survived a tremedous trauma. Lucky was brought into EVC on May 25, 1997. He was shot twice by a rifle or a hand gun, and left to die in a revene in Front Royal, Va. Lucky did not have a collar or any identification, and no one had called for a missing dog. Lucky was in poor shape when he arrived, malnourished, very weak and had been this way for awhile. Lucky had survived a day or two in the wild before being located. His coat was in poor condition, he had maggots in his wounds, and his future was looking very grim. Lucky stayed over the Memorial weekend with IV fluids, antibiotics and other medicine to help him out. There were even thoughts of putting him down (euthanizing). Several technicians took turns on taking care of him, brushing him, cleaning his wounds, and giving support to this wonderful dog. Lucky was always happy, never even tried to bite when painful treatments were givin. The crew looked for someone to take care of Lucky, and they soon did... a veterinary student who was at the clinic doing her rotations found that a family member of her's grew very found of Lucky, and adopted him. Lucky recieved a bath ( dust used to fall off of him when you pet him), and regained his strength over the weeks. Lucky is one of the most wonderful, ever so loving and now very happy doggie. The EVC crew will probably never know what really happened to Lucky, and some would just rather not know. All that matters is he is alive, happy and is currently touching someones heart. Lucky is estimated to be 1 - 2 years old.

The right side: Lucky was shot just below the eye in the cheek. That bullet hit the jaw and fragmented. Fragments traveled all through his face, and even destroying his right eye. Which was surgically removed.

His second shot was in the left shoulder, which also hit bone, and fragmented within his body. It was truly amazing that no vital organs were hit. Here he is growing his hair back.

Lucky was put under anesthesia, and intubated... then x-rays were taken.

Here you can see the bullet fragments, they kind of look like little spots throughout the head and neck. There were also large pieces of bullet around his shoulder, but due to lack of space on the page, I did not upload them in.

This is one happy and lucky dog!!!

This is the Emergency Veterinary Crew who worked together to save

"our little happy stray dog".

...may all animals get the same chance that Lucky did...

Lucky is one of many success cases that the EVC takes in, and finds special homes for. If you are interested in adopting a special friend home, feel free to contact the EVC at 1-703-281-5121.

Although sporadic, the EVC does come across many pets in need of homes.
