• Fame - Although it is not entirely clear in the painting, in the Fame position the woman sits on a stool. A more solid support such as a table is in fact preferable.

  • Fasolada - The Greek version of the spiced bean soup which is eaten all around the Mediterranean in the winter months. Similar dishes are made elsewhere, notably the island of Jersey where the famous 'baked bean' is said to originate. various types of white bean are used in a thick sauce which in more recent times often contains tomato. Improbably, beans have long been regarded as a sexual stimulant. St. Jerome forbade nuns to eat beans because of the widespread belief that they 'excited the genitals' of women.

  • Feathers - Courtesans, and other professional makers of love, often used feathers for stimulation. Nipples, clitoris, anus and penis were given most attention, usually with the stiffer and more pointed varieties of feather.

  • Feet - In the West the erotic possibilities of feet are rather ignored. Oriental erotic massage often begins with the feet which is immensely relaxing as well as pleasurable. Experience from tickling will tell you where the nerve endings are (an estimated seventy thousand of them!) and also that the massaging movements should be slow and firm.
Toes should be gently tugged individually to relieve tension and can be sucked - a practice called 'shrimping' in America. This is so pleasurable that some women can achieve orgasm without receiving any other stimulation.

  • Fellatio - The most generally-used term for the practice of sucking and exciting the penis with the mouth. Fellatio can be used in foreplay to excite your partner or as a different ways of making love in which case his ejaculation is usually taken in the mouth. Some women like to swallow semen, some do not. It is not obligatory and his ejaculation can equally well be used dramatically to spray over your breasts or elsewhere. Men attach value to their semen, so if you do take it in your mouth do not wish to swallow, dispose of it discreetly. (No harm can come from swallowing the semen of your long-term partner but remember that it carries the AIDS virus in infected people. Avoid all oral-genital contact if you are not sure.)
Fellatio is as old as the human race and is regularly depicted in the erotic art of all cultures. The later Indian love manuals give it particular attention, for example the Ratiratnapradipika: 'Her mouth quickens now upon the shaft; when you stir to her lips and tongue tip, she swallows it as deeply as she can and kisses when you cry out: this is Sangara, Swallowed Up'.
Most lovers soon find their preferred method. As with all lovemaking, talk about it. And if he is shy ask him whether he would you to do anything differently. Remember that it is the tonguing and mouthing of the penis which is important and not suction - although sucking sounds are an aphrodisiac for many men.
The majority of women keep their head relatively still and masturbate the shaft of the penis while sucking - some like to move their head up and down, but this becomes difficult for the quicker strokes as orgasm approaches. Newcomers should remember to keep their teeth well clear of the sensitive glans.
Most uninhibited lovers enjoy oral sex, but there are no rules except to do what pleases you and your partner. Guilt has no place in bed.

  • Fennel - This fragrant plant was used as an aphrodisiac throughout the ancient world. In India the fennel was squeezed and the juice mixed with milk, honey and liquorice. Around the Mediterranean, fennel soup was a popular aphrodisiac.
In European folk tradition, fennel is often associated with the vulva. Many women find a few drops of the essential oil in their bath soothing.

  • Fig - This sweet fruit has a complicated relationship with human sexuality. In modern Greece the word for fig is slang for homosexual; in ancient Greece it was one of the prescribed foods at the Dionysian orgies and the favourite offering to Priapus, the phallic god of physical love. Figs were eaten at traditional Chinese wedding feasts and have a widespread reputation as aphrodisiacs whereever they are grown.
  • Fish - The man assumes the Lotus Position; when he rolls onto his back the couple will be joined in the Fish asana. Only for those skilled in Hatha Yoga.
  • Flame Face - In this asana the woman lies on her side and raises her leg so that her lover can enter her. When full penetration is achieved it becomes a cuissade position.

  • Flanquette - This group of sexual positions is the frontal equivalent of cuissade. The legs of the couple overlap.
  • Florentine - In both circumcised and uncircumcised men the strength (and speed of attaining) orgasm can be greatly increased if his partner takes up all the slack skin of the penis and holds it tight at the root while he moves in and out of her.

  • Flowers - The traditional and best gift for a woman from her lover. The natural fragrance of some flowers has also been credited with aphrodisiac powers by different herbalists and writers. • Footsie - An under-the-table game which lovers sometimes play. The excitement can be intensified by other factors such as risk, and intimacy shared but concealed. (Long nails on either hands or feet are a considerable disadvantage sexually).

  • Foot Yoke - The Chinese equivalent of this asana is called Pawing Horse.

  • Frequency - Sex itself is an aphrodisiac. If you make love frequently you look better and sleep better - which helps to keep your sexual activity at a high level. Regular sex will certainly mean that you have a good chance of remaining sexually active well into old age. Forget old wives tales - old wives can still have an enjoyable sex life.
  • Frog's Legs - Still a delicacy in French cuisine of course, and much prized by the Romans as an aphrodisiac.
