Description

Final Fantasy VII is the story of Cloud Strife, a former member of the military organization Soldier, who is on a quest to bring down the evil corporation Shinra. Along the way he must search for the truth about his own past and identity. The story starts in Midgar, a large industrial city where the priviliged live on large steel plates above the slums. Our hero joins a rebel organization on their mission to blow up a reactor, thus foiling the evil plans of Shinra.

Cloud eventually makes it out of Midgar and here the real fun begins. There are many areas on this world to explore and many kinds of monsters to battle. This is one of the most involved games imaginable. With several characters, weapons, levels, and materia, it is easy to spend 150 hours on a game and still not do everything possible.

There are many bosses in this game that can be quite confusing. The monster Genova comes in many forms, each with slightly different powers. This was the one monster I always had to look up in the book to make sure I was attacking in the correct way. But it is not really very difficult to beat in any of its incarnations.

Also appearing frequently throughout the game is Sephiroth, another former member of Soldier who is a legend in the land. Supposedly he was killed several years ago, but we know better. Sephiroth is the final monster of the game, but if you know what you are doing and have built up properly, you will have absolutely no problem.

My Experience

I have beaten Final Fantasy VII a total of 7 times so far for a total of almost 1000 of game play. The first time I played it took me a long time to get used to it. I had only played one RPG to date, Dark Cloud. FF7 is very different in that you are fighting with three characters at once rather than just one. Also, the active time battle system may be a little complex for some people as it was for me.

I was introduced to this game by my former roommates, who had each played it 3 or 4 times. They were good, but there were many things they had never done. Breeding gold chocobos was beyond them, as were beating Emerald and Ruby Weapon. On my first game I was able to do all three. Unfortunately I did not take very good notes (I am still not good at this), so when I went back to play again it was rather challenging. I couldn't remember how I had killed them! I have it down now, though.

I believe I have now accomplished everything possible in FF7. I will tell many of the hints here, but I will probably make some new pages for specific tips.

Hints, Tips, and Tricks

The book for FF7 is pretty good, but it leaves a lot of things out. That being said, you should buy it anyway. At the beginning of the game I suggest you fight as much as possible to get used to the battle system and try and build up experience and money. Don't worry about materia, because you won't get to control it for a little bit, anyway. If you are confused at first, just keep pressing the O button during battle. It will do a regular attack against the closest enemy. Although you will not be very powerful, you should not be killed. Try and hoard your potions as much as possible, for there are many times in the beginning of the game where you won't have to use them at all. Anytime you go to sleep you are automatically restored to full health and magic points.
