Blitzball fans Tidus Attacks Sucked into the future
Tidus swims away Playing Blitzball Tidus, Lulu, and Wakka

Description

How do I describe a game like this? Complex. This game is one of the most involved I have ever played. With seven playable characters, weapons and armor, and aeons to summon, there is a lot to learn and accomplish. To begin, you meet Tidus, a young Blitzball player. Blitzball is a combination of football and soccer played underwater. Tidus is a star player whose father was also a star until he disappeared several years before. Tidus meets up with Auron, a friend of his father, just before a monster attacks the city. At the end of the battle Tidus is sucked into a vortex.

Tidus wakes up far in the future in a land with no technology. No one believes his story, for the city he grew up in is now a sacred ruin. After meeting Yuna he decides to join her in the quest to defeat Sin, the monster that put him in this mess in the first place. His companions are:

Yuna - Yuna is a young summoner trying to live up to the name of her famous father (sound familiar?). The big surprise is that Tidus's father was here after he disappeared, and traveled on a quest with Yuna's dad. Small world. Yuna is very weak and whiny when you first meet her, but she will become a very powerful character if you build her up right. All of the other party members have pledged to be her guardians for this journey.

Wakka - Wakka is a blitzball player who is taking a year off to be a guardian for Yuna. His brother was a guardian and he is trying to be as good as his brother was. Wakka uses balls for weapons, so he is essential for fighting many flying creatures early in the game.

Kimhari - Kimhari is a young warrior of the Ronso tribe, tall blue beasts with horns on their heads. He he is very quiet but powerful. Kimhari's most useful ability is being able to learn the attacks that are used against him by monsters.

Lulu - Lulu used to date Wakka's brother. She is constantly questioning and berating the human males in the party. Lulu is useful for offensive magic early in the game. If built up properly her magic abilities make her one of the strongest characters in the game.

Rikku - Rikku is a young Al Behd girl who looks like she has to go to the bathroom all the time. She is rather weak at first, but she has unique abilities that make her worthwhile to build up. She can steal from monsters, which makes her very valuable.

My Experience

I have finished FFX four times for a total of about 550 hours of gameplay. The first time I was really lost because FFX has introduced the 'Sphere Grid' for character build-up. An entire book could be written about this system. The easiest for me was to not worry as much my first time through. I skipped several spheres that didn't seem important (most of them weren't) knowing that I would definitely play again. The graphics on this game guarantee at least one return trip.

On my second time through, I concentrated on build-up and side quests. There is a lot of peripheral activity available that is completely unnecessary for game completion. I would recommend waiting until you have a really good grasp of the game and the mechanics before you try to take this step.

Hints, Tips, and Tricks

My biggest tip for this game is to GET THE BOOK! I don't see how anyone could complete this game without it. But either way, I have found that it is good to just rush through most of the early point of the game. Save as often as possible, and don't be afraid to reset if you mess something up. But until you get farther in the game, you have very little freedom. You walk almost everywhere and can't easily backtrack to most places. So get as far as possible before trying to accomplish too much on the side.

Battle is one area that really requires some work. The way FFX is set up, every person who participates in a battle gets points for that battle. My trick is to put people into the battle and let them skip their turn. As long as they make SOME action, they get credit. It can be time consuming to skip 6 characters just to let one kill the monster in one shot, but you will build up your characters much quicker this way.

Aeons are another element of this game that require a lot of work. As you travel, you will have access to many of these creatures which Yuna summons by doing a fancy little dance. They must be used to gain experience. The more times you call them, the more powerful they get. There are some extra aeons you can acquire, but they aren't a secret. The book tells exactly where and how to get them.

Weapons are pretty cool in this game because there is such a wide variety of them. I have not tried out many of them, because it would pretty much take a whole game just to sample the various battle instruments available. I do recommend going the extra mile to get everyone's ultimate weapon. It is worth the time.
