Human insecurities are born out of our constant search for a new and more acceptable identity. We unconfident of our selves and constantly seek to 'fit in'. Finding or attaining individuality however is an arduous task as we are presented (thanks to mass media) with 'easy to imitate' role models at every corner. It is hard to maintain a sense of individuality among the throng of stereotype characters ready for us to chose from. Whether fictitious or based on reality, they are there and we mimic them consciously or subconsciously as it is easier to act on a fixed set of defined axioms than to define your own.
Individuality is not living your life regardless for the needs of others or for the welfare of society but it is achieving common goals on your own, in the spirit of "I did it my way." Individuality is not a person vandalizing a shop for the sake of self-expression rather one who can stand aside while a mob passes and not get caught up in the mob mentality.
The generation gap is borne out of the search of younger generations for their individuality. Elder generations are unable to accept the changes that are consequences of this search and hence the constant clashes.
Change is constant as we slowly metamorphose from the imperfect creatures that we are. Those unable to keep up or unable to accept the change will be lost, as standing up against the impetuous of change is not humanly possible.
Come gather round people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone If time to you is worth saving Then you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a changin' (Bob Dylan)
Change is consistent in the seemingly inconsistent flow of trends and to avoid being swallowed by the flowing tide of time one must swim along.Liberalization alongwith the trend toward individuality is an essential (and much debated) feature of change today our attitude toward subjects previously considered taboo is loosening much to the dismay and horror of moralists. They too are afraid of change.
