My first association
with the Andes Group in 1973 came about from a decision to join a Spanish
Language Program. I had long had an interest in visiting Spain and South
America as a tourist and this gave me my first opportunity to meet Spanish
speakers on a personal basis.
In getting to know something about the culture and business of Chile in particular, I saw the potential and desirability of closer economic and political links between Australia and the Latin American countries. At that time the Andes Group was providing advice to South American business people resident in Perth on establishing themselves in the leather industry. I was able to suggest a variety of contacts and find information which prove useful in the exercise. Difficulty in understanding another language of course means that many migrating to this country remain cut off from the larger community. Australia misses the opportunity to benefit from cultural interchange. This can only be reversed if a conscious effort is made to develop closer ties between the peoples. Australians have much to learn from the experience of Latin American countries in business and politics and the Andes Group can be a rewarding starting point. |
