Over the years other officers have contributed
enormously to the success of the Andes Group Inc. Among these are: Paula
Santana, and Helen Olivieri as Secretaries, Christine Ing and Marianne
McCall as Vice-presidents, Alfredo Rivas, Chris Palazzollo, and Bernardo
Dunovits as Treasurers. Their enthusiasms and efforts are greatly appreciated.
Many others members in the Group have been working hard to forge the way
for a better understanding of the Latin American Culture in Australia.
In June 1991 we put a submission to
the Commonwealth of Australia Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs
and Trade for their inquiry on Australia Latin-American Relations. The
term of reference for the inquiry were:
-
extension of
political and cultural exchange;
-
the further development
of trade and transport links;
-
the prospects
for investment and joint economic ventures;
-
joint participation
in multilateral and other international organisations; and
-
co-operation
on matters of international law enforcement.
126 submissions were presented to the
Committee. It emerged that links between Australia and Latin-America were
more extensive in 19th century than in the 20th. In 1992, the Standing
Committee published a Report containing 63 recommendations to the
Australian Government to establish stronger links across a wide range of
economic, cultural and academic activities. |
