The third planet from the Sun in the Solar system, our own home, the Earth, may well be unique in the universe. It looks exceptionally beautiful to us in photographs taken from space, with its atmosphere of nitrogen and oxygen, blue oceans of water, and constantly changing cloud shapes. And it is, so far, the only place where we know for certain that matter of the universe has become alive. We are familiar with the daily patterns of life on Earth.
