Europe @t School - Internet Award Scheme 2000/2001 project

According to the latest Eurobarometer survey almost every other citizen of European Union knows only his/her own language. The worst situation is in Great Britain, the best - in Luxembourg. Several thousand citizens have been asked about the knowledge of foreign languages. 47% of them claimed the knowledge of only their own native tongue. Only 2% of inhabitants in Luxembourg and fewer than 15% in Sweden, Denmark and Holland have given the same answer. Considerably worse situation was among the French ( 51% monolingual ), Spaniards ( 53% ) and Portuguese ( 56% ). In Britain, where the situation is the worst, 66% speak only English. English dominates among foreign languages which are learnt by inhabitants in EU. Its knowledge was declared by 41% . Almost every fifth, claimed the knowledge of French, every tenth - German, 7% - Spanish. Only 8% are able to speak three foreign languages.

We, pupils from 3 schools in 3 European countries, teamed up in order to study the foreign language issue in our local environments. We
learned what languages are spoken in Europe
performed a foreign language knowledge street survey
(13th of January 2001), at the same time in our three towns
checked what languages are taught in our schools
found out the number of foreigners in our schools
