The Awards Night
20.11.99
On 20th November, 1999, the Exeter Phoenix Arts Centre played host to an evening of poetry. This special event was organised in order to present prizes to the winners of the 1999 Exeter Poetry Prize, and to hear readings from the anthology of commended poems. The judge of the competition, Jo Shapcott, introduced a selection of readings from poets from all around England, including work from both new and established writers.

Among those poets attending was first prizewinner Ross Cogan, fourth prize winner, Devon-based Jenny Galton-Fenzi, Clare MacDonald Shaw, Donald Atkinson, Terry Pritchard, Neil Wenborn, Flora Cruft and B A Humar. Jo Shapcott also contributed readings of two prize winning poems.
The event was also attended by members of the public, and by Derrick Woolf and Tilla Brading of Odyssey Press, producers of the anthology.

Overall, the event was a great success, and thanks must go to the Phoenix for providing complementary drinks. Jo Shapcott summed up the evening by saying: "I hope we have made here tonight, something that's like a little city of poetry, and we go away feeling strengthened by that..." The anthology stands as proof to why the Exeter Poetry Prize continues to gain such an excellent reputation in this country and beyond.
Poet Jacqueline Hughes reads her poem, "Investor's Dilemma."
