Spear Type Throws

It is not very difficult from only a few feet back to throw a knife from the handle, send it straight, and make it stick. This can be done with most knives. What is not so easy is getting the knife to shoot straight for 10 to 15 feet and stick. This is nearly if not impossible with many knives. However, the knife back in figure 11 can be sent straight for this distance and made to stick.

This is difficult. In order to do this, you need a knife that is reasonable straight and well balanced. It has to be held near the end and is normally best held with the index and middle finger along the blade (Fig 12). When passing through the arc, instead of keeping the stiff wrist, it actually moves the opposite way than it would if throwing a ball, as if following the target with the point of the blade during pass through. This acts to counter the rotation almost as choke does, but much more dramatic. The problem is that getting the exact counter pressure to send the blade straight is extremely difficult to master.
