Walther 480 Series

After the 13,000 or so Zero Series P.38's. Walther was assigned the 480 code. This new code eliminated the Walther banner. This was to deny any enemies present or future, the manufacturer of the pistol which could lead to a bombing attack on the plant, and slow down or eliminate weapons production. This code was used through late August and September of 1940. Approximately 7,200 pistols were produced with this mark making it extremely rare. The grips had been changed once again to the familiar ribbed black or mottled dark red Bakelite plastic. The German Army had found in the field, that the ribbed grips shed mud and dirt better than the checkered plastic of the previous Zero Series and these grips were used for the rest of the war. Magazines were still stamped with the pistol's serial number and the hi-polish and excellent machinework remained in these pistols.
