I know, I know. I love the Beatles, how can I possible care for the bloody Brit pop brats who think they are the reincarnation of my favorite group? Well, after Noel and Liam Gallagher finish fighting over which one of the really is John Lennon (Liam's got the better voice, but Noel's the songwriter) it must be noted that Oasis is a hell of a lot more like The Rolling Stones than The Beatles. Tearing up hotel rooms and the like? Ahh, I don't remember my Beatles being termed the British bad boys of 60's pop. Oh the things that can happen when bands delude themselves and the media eats it up!
Definitely Maybe (What's the Story) Morning Glory Be Here Now The Masterplan

The best album of their six is (What's The Story) Morning Glory?. As a complete album it's much better than the "shamelessly Beatlesy" Definitely Maybe or Be Here Now with its far too many Fab Four song references. (What's The Story) Morning Glory excels because it's the most originally Oasis collection. You can't help shaking the feeling on the other two albums that they really want to be the Beatles. And their new album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants is pretty good too. Familiar to Millions is delightful window into what the live experience (and at famed Wmbley Stadium no less) with the boys is like.

The best Oasis songs are the ones that are the least Beatlesy: "Slide Away," "Married With Children," "Don't Look Back in Anger," "Wonderwall," "Don't Go Away," and "D'You Know What I Mean?" I would admit to liking "All Around the World" but it is far too much a hybrid of John's "The Word" and "All You Need Is Love." Their album of B-sides and live cuts, The Masterplan, shows that like their idols, The Beatles, there's not enough room on any album for all their great tracks.

And if you've seen the VH1 Behind the Music of Oasis, well, you'd love them even more. Liam was unbelievably (and wonderfully in a great rock'n'roll way) arrogant and Noel was arrogant, but in a slightly more mature confident way. The subtitles were very helpful. Notably absent, though, was any mention of The Masterplan. But I guess VH1 can be forgiven since they do call Oasis "the '90s greatest rock band."
