Oldies

The Association

The Association had two great songs in 1967 alone that make my top songs of all time, Windy and Never My Love. They were one of those bands that was too cool for words. They also did a great heartfelt lovesong called Cherish.

The Beach Boys

I know the Beach Boys were the American answer to the British Invasion led by the Beatles, but they have some of the coolest songs ever written. Not just greats like Good Vibrations and Surfin' U.S.A., but also Wouldn't it Nice? and ballads like Don't Worry Baby and God Only Knows. As a California kid it's hard not to love their homages to the sun, the beach, and the cars.

Ricky Nelson

For someone who grew up in the public eye, Ricky Nelson turned out relatively normal. He had a great voice and was a perfect '50s teen idol. He was a rockabilly great. Garden Party is my favorite and probably his best song. But you can't forget Travelin' Man, Poor Little Fool or Fools Rush In.

The Monkees

The '60s Spice Girls? Well, kind of. So what there was a casting call to put the four together? They're still pretty cool. How could you not love Daydream Believer and A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You? And, hey, they play their own instruments now.

The Mamas and the Papas

Great harmonizing and some of the sweetest, smartest songs of the '60s and even now. Creeque Alley is probably my favorite, with Dream a Little Dream as a close second. Also: California Dreamin' and I Saw Her Again Last Night. The songs are great to listen to and to sing along to.

Don't forget to look at the Beatles: Here, There and Everywhere.
