BENJAMIN SYKES BORN 1808
AND HIS DESCENDANTS
Benjamin was baptised on the 25th December,
1808 at the Meltham Chapel of Almondbury Church.
Benjamin married Martha Eastwood on the 17th
September, 1838 at the Church of All Hallows, Almondbury.
Martha was born on the 18th April 1816 in Honley to Thomas Eastwood and
Sarah Dyson.
In 1838 Benjamin was the Innkeeper of Jacob's Well and he was also a
spinner.
In 1841 he was a clothier and woollen warper and by 1844 back to being an
Innkeeper again.
Their residence in 1839 was New Town, Honley whereas on the 1841 and 1851
census , Benjamin and family were living
at Neeley's, Honley.
CHILDREN OF BENJAMIN AND MARTHA
John William
was baptised 17 September 1837 at Almondbury.
He married Elizabeth who was born c.1845 in Liverpool.
As a boy of 13 years he was employed as a woollen cloth finisher in Honley.
Later on he joined the Army and served in the East Indies. In 1881 was
resident at barracks in Warrington.

Allen
was born 6 August 1839 at New Town, Honley.
He appears on the 1841 census living with his parents in Honley but does not
appear in 1851.
He married Hannah Lees on 12 January 1862 at the Register Office in
Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire.
Hannah was the daughter of William and Nancy and she was born c.1833 in
Berrybrow, Almondbury.
By 1862 Allen had moved to Mossley, near Ashton-under-Lyne in Lancashire.
He was employed in the cotton industry having worked as a cardroom jobber,
stripper and labourer.
In 1871 he and his family lived at 32 Sack Street, Mossley.
Allen died on the 10 May 1876 at Black Leach, Saddleworth. (This could have
been Mossley, part of the town came under Saddleworth Urban District at that
time).
Hannah was living in Mossley in 1851. Before her marriage to Allen, she had
son Thomas born illegitimately in 1859.
After Allen's death she married Thomas Kenworthy.
CHILDREN
Eliza Ann born June 1864 at Mossley. Married Joshua Buckley in 1887 at
Saddleworth Register Office.

Ben born June 1872 at Mossley. He married Emma Mayall in 1901 and he was
employed as a cotton piecer.
