The Sykes Family Coat of Arms

One of the greatest of Yorkshire surnames, it is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word interpreted as "sulcus aquarius"
- a water-course or water-furrow running out of a quagmire.

My Sykes ancestors begin with James who was born in about 1780 in Honley, West Yorkshire.
He married Mary Hirst on the 24th December, 1807 at the Church of All Hallows at Almondbury, West Yorkshire.
Mary was born on the 17th September, 1781 at Almondbury.

Thomas baptised 19 June 1809 at Almondbury (my direct ancestor)
Thomas married Elizabeth Fluke Parkin on the 26th December 1831 at Almondbury.
Elizabeth was baptised 16 January 1814 at Honley, West Yorkshire. She was the daughter of Esther Parkin, father not known.

Little is known about Thomas' life other than he was a woollen weaver and that with his family he had lived in
Holmfirth before moving to Honley.
Thomas died in 1850.

In 1851 Elizabeth was living on Borhouse Lane in Honley.
Elizabeth and family moved to Mossley some time after this as did other members of the Sykes family.

She died on 20 May 1891 at 18 Back Percy Street, Mossley.

Death Certificate of Elizabeth

Elizabeth is buried at Mossley Cemetery, Grave number 1415.
