a claim shanty and he was elected the teacher.
The school ran for four months with about seventeen pupils, ages ranging
from 10 years to 25 years.
Leonard's main occupation was farming.
In 1882 Leonard and family moved to South Dakota where he became a land

It was renamed Nutley Post Office in 1886.
There is also a lake in Nutley Township named after Leonard, "Hazelden
Lake". It is situated on farmland which was inhabited
by the Hazelden family around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
No trace of Betsey can be found on the 1990 census and it is believed that
she had died.

At the age of 13 years she was a servant in Berwick but still living at home

Her son Alfred was born illegitimately in

Maria died at Wandsworth in 1891.
For census purposes, Maria's son Alfred appears to have used the surname of

this document Richard Brockwell appears as Richard Hazelden.
Alfred married Mary Ann Offord on the 30th January, 1893 at St Matthew's
Church, Brixton.
