ELIZABETH ANDERSON 1865-1951

Elizabeth was born 23 September 1865 in
Brooklyn, New York.
She married Charles Francis Kent on 9 May 1893 in Davenport, Scott County,
Iowa, he was born 5 June 1863 in Davenport.

Charles was originally engaged to Elizabeth's sister, Eleanor, who was
killed in 1888 when she fell down a flight of stairs
whilst visiting friends in Chicago.
Charles graduated from Davenport High School in 1879 and went to work
initially for H A Emeis (druggist) and
secondly Frank Nadler (druggist). He then attended North Western University,
Department of Pharmacy and
graduated in July 1888.
He was a part-time employee of Fuller & Fuller Wholesale Druggist in Chicago
and he also worked in a drug store
in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
In April 1892 the Kent &
Co. partnership comprised of Charles, E S Ballard and J W Ballard was
formed.
They bought a drug store from C V Baxter in De Witt, Iowa and Charles was
proprietor and Harry Ballard
and Abner Beard were clerks.
In 1909 Charles bought the interests of the Ballards and became the sole
owner. He continued in the drug business in the same location until
September 1939 when the business was sold to Paul Ginther.
The Kent Store
Elizabeth and Charles lived at three locations in De Witt before acquiring
the Crimp property in West De Witt which
later was owned by their youngest daughter, Marjorie, and then by her
daughter Jean Henderson-Schmidt until
it was sold in 1991. It had remained in family ownership for over 90 years.
The six children of Elizabeth and Charles were educated at De Witt public
schools.
Charles was active in civic affairs, serving on the school board, city
council and library board.
Elizabeth and Charles celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on 9 May
1943, sharing it with family and
their many friends and acquaintances in De Witt.
Elizabeth died 3 January 1951 and Charles died 21 June 1944, both in De
Witt, Clinton County, Iowa.
