HALLOWES
" Lords of the Manor "
The name Hallowes has yeoman links in
Derbyshire as far back as the 16th Century. It seems to stem from a
particular
area of Dronfield where Hallowes Farm - meaning " Holy House " - used to
stand.
Maria's grandfather, Gulielmi or William, was
certainly present in Great Longstone in the mid 1600's.
He appears in the document " The Free and Voluntary Present 1661 Derbyshire
" which concerned the giving of
money to enable the coronation of King Charles II which took place on 23
April 1661. He had actually succeeded
his father Charles I following his execution in 1849 but lived in exile in
Europe until after the Civil War. On his return
he had insufficient funds to pay for his coronation and therefore, along
with a grant from the government, people of means
were expected to donate funds to this event. William donated the sum of two
shillings.
William then appears in the " Derbyshire Hearth Tax Assessments
1662-1670 " where he is shown as having one hearth.
Although farming seemed to be the usual occupation of the Hallowes males,
William was in fact a " Chapman ".
This involved dealing or peddling goods and was usually the occupation of an
itinerant who would travel between
villages selling their wares.
It is not known who or when William married but he did father at least six
children:

Benjamin was the father of Maria who was baptised at Great Longstone on the
7th February, 1694.
Little is known about Benjamin other than he had six children:

Great Longstone on 9 February 1718
