WHITEHEAD
" one who has white hair "

The name Whitehead was first found in
Lancashire where they held a family seat from ancient times,
both before and after the The Norman Conquest in 1066.
The parents of Betty were William Whitehead and Hannah Buckley.
William was born in 1791 the place yet to be identified, although we learn
from the 1841 census that it was not Stalybridge.
Hannah was also born in 1791 in Stalybridge.
Betty was born on the 8th September, 1809 and baptised at St Michael and All
Angels Church in Ashton-under-Lyne
on the 7th January 1810.
She was registered as Betty Buckley as she was born some months before her
parents marriage which took place on the
5th November, 1810 at St Michael's.
William and Hannah lived on Rassbottom Street, Stalybridge - next door to
their future son-in-law George Waterhouse
- and William was a greengrocer.
They had seven children:

born 1821, married William Frith. Hannah died 4 May 1870 and is buried at
Old Chapel, Dukinfield.

On her marriage certificate in 1835, Betty names herself as " Betty Buckley
". Perhaps this was because she had to
produce her birth record, or maybe just because it was her legal name. On
the birth certificate of at least one of her
children she states her maiden name as Whitehead.
It was highly likely that she would have been known by this name throughout
her life.
Betty died on the 30th June, 1872 at her home on Chapel Street, Stalybridge.
Her brother-in-law, William Frith, was with her at her death.
She is buried at Old Chapel, Dukinfield with her husband George and two of
their children, Edward and Mary Hannah.
